So it seems we've gone back to the 'old' formatting tools - what was wrong with the 'new' ones?

It's always exciting seeing whats changed on STW on a daily basis 😉

For a lot of users it was creating an avalanche of gibberish that they had to go back and edit out after posting..... then people got fed up of cleaning them up and posts were just left looking like someone had sneezed in a letraset factory.

it was possible before to switch off 'fancy editor' in your profile so people could do that if they were getting a lot of crud in their posts but whatever recent update seemed to stop that opt out from working

People couldn't work them, tbh I liked the quote functionality even if it wasn't completely intuitive at first but there were frequent code messes so I guess something wasn't playing nicely.

actually - the regular / fancy formatting its there - you might just need to  turn it on in preferences. What for some users might seem to have been a change was their preference for the 'fancy editor' being off and that preference being ignored for a while. So maybe just check what you have set under preferences

Yes, both options are available. Just go to your preferences and choose which one you prefer. The bug from last week was that the code version was disabled. It's now back.

I guess if you thought the formatting tools were 'new' you've just had them switched off all along.

Yay.... I quite like the fancy editor so it's back on.

(the one time one of my posts got all messed up was when I'd dragged a block of text from one place in the post to another - that must have broken something)

I guess if you thought the formatting tools were ‘new’ you’ve just had them switched off all along.

You've probably guessed correctly!

Trick with the fancy editor when quoting is to only copy text. If you copy the author name you will drag in the dreaded html code that sits between the author name and the text of their post. It is unintuitive and we are looking at switching to a new fancy editor that works better.

There are a whole bunch of bugs. If you copy / paste text from any other source, make use of the the bold and italic formatting buttons in your own text, copying text from a post that has used them and so on. You certainly get the biggest unwanted consequences from including eh poster's name in quoted text though
