Hey all, heading up to Fort William for the WEMBO 24 in October. Taking the missus up and looking at spending a few nights there after the event. Seen some log cabins that look nice to stay in. Is there enough to do in and around the area for a few days though? We'll have a car. We're both fairly outdoorsy and enjoy anything active, but the missus isn't a mountain biker yet (but she has tried it once and enjoyed it). I probably won't feel like reaching the summit of Ben Nevin the day after the 24 hour race but would be open to any other suggestions!

Cheers chaps!

Fort Bill is pretty weather dependent. Plenty to do when it's good but bloody grim when it isn't. What sort of stuff is she into? There's plenty of walking / running options and all sorts of guided / instructed activities on offer.

go to kinlochleven and climb the ice wall, walk the canal, commando monument, get on the train to the isles.. or go just as far as the viaduct in harry potter, day out to balamory/tobermory ( 2 short ferry rides away ..)

Plenty of nice easy walks, ie along the Great Glen Way, next to the canal. Or up Glen Nevis to see the waterfalls.

The High wire course at Nevis Range is fun. And the gondola up the hill.

Take a steam train to Mallaig and back.

Or a ferry to an island - Rum or Eigg or Skye.

All very weather dependant but
- head south to Kinlochleven and take sort but steep'ish walk to the Grey Mare's Tail. The south road along the loch is spectacular, miss the first signposted turn off, cross the Ballachulish bridge, then turn left at Glencoe village (well short of Glencoe the famous glen). GMT car park is just over the river in Kinlochleven. Signposted.
- up Glen Nevis to the car park then follow the path to the flatlands below the Ring of Steall. Energetic but not deadly.
- North East to Fort Augustus, hang about the locks and watch the boats, then onward to Urquhart Castle for some monster spotting
- like Big Engineering? Ben Cruachan is a mountaim some 60 miles drive away which was hollowed out and a 400MW hydro power station built inside it - you need to book that though. Oban has a nice wee distillery producing a decent drink, and the loop via Glen Coe, Glen Orchy, Oban and back up the coast is stunning. Lot of driving though.

BTW steam train to Mallaig is pricey and views from the ordinary train are just as good. Get the steam tain timetable, get the train before the steam train to Glenfinnan, get off, head for the road and watch the steam train crossing the viaduct.

We both like going for walks and sight seeing etc, would definitely be into seeing some nice waterfalls.

The weather is likely to be pretty bad in October, cold wet and low cloud.

Fort Bill itself is a truly awful place too, try and stay some where else!

Park at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre, look at some taxidermy and pick a walk.aforementioned wire bridge a must.

Nevis Bar below Nevissport. Nae locals other than wee jock. Proper fire, always got an aviemore ale on.

Avoid the locals, I was one.
