I've got an 0.5 Tb external hard disk that has a partition on it that contains some software that I'd like to get rid of (it's some old guff that was preloaded and I can't format it as I don't have admin permissions.

Anybody know of a programme that'll clear it so I can run it as one drive.

Cheers

Ken

So plugging it in then right clicking on it while on My Computer, then reformatting from there doesn't work?

Use 'disk management' in the control panel. You'll need to remove the existing partitions then create one new one. If you want to keep the data on the other partition then you'll need some software like Norton Ghost or Partition Magic. Both these options will need admin rights on your PC. If you don't have that (work PC?) then you'll need some other way to get in as admin like a boot disk.

I've tried both of the above and neither work as apparently it's part of the firmware.

I think I'll just park it in the cupboard and sort it out another day

First time I've been let down by the STW massive 🙄

If you could be arsed, taking out the disc and mounting inside your pc might give you full control over it

(I R not a pc expert and death - computer or otherwise - may ensue if this advice is followed)

Can you use a linux live CD on the computer in question? My preferred approach for this sort of thing is always gparted in linux - doesn't give you the headaches windows partitioning tools do (can also resize partitions and move data around like Ghost and PM, but for free).

apparently it's part of the firmware.
What are you basing this on?

Delete and recreate the partitions in Disk Manager before trying to format it, failing that +1 for gparted. Failing that, stick it in a box and send it to me, I could use more storage.

What make and model is it?
