6r4 dribble drool 😀
I saw one competing in a sprint a few years ago - looks and sounds awesome. Quicker than the Pikes Peak quattro (although that was probably because of the tight circuit...)
Parents had a MG metro, grandad had a metro GTi, I'd be letting the side down if I didn't buy/build a 6r4.
Thats my justification for my latest man project/idea and I'm sticking to it!
Think this is going in my RSS threads. 🙂 That Metro engine powered the Jag XJ220 IIRC, and the Integrale is just gorgeous even today.
6R4's cost as a mint as will their insurance.
And Quattro's ain't hatchbacks!
That Metro engine powered the Jag XJ220 IIRC
It did indeed, twin garret T3's as well 😀
Turbo-lag-erific!
A mate of mine had a 205 GTI a few years ago.
I was in France when I got a text message that just said GTI RIP.
He has a Golf gti now
6R4's cost as a mint as will their insurance.
I'm 23, plenty of time to save up 🙂
I'm waiting for someone to build a kit car version, surely theres as much market for that as the lancia wedge of cheese?
Never going to lose control in a Pug?????? 😯 as long as you didnt lift in a corner 🙂 loads were crashed by people who didnt know how to drive.
Mk 2 Golf 8v the best of the bunch.
Did citoren ever make anything noteworth in that era? I presume the saxo was a re branded 106, so what was the equivalent 205 gti?
So close
Mk 2 Golf 8v the best of the bunch.

M8 used to have one (ex-Roger Clarke? rally car), and being as he scared me silly in his normal car, i'm so glad I never got a go in it (you needed ear defenders to ride in it).
As for insurance, apparently a auto-trader insurance policy is the way ahead to cover you for silliness.
Used to cost him £200 for a part worn tyre....their speciality was a figure of 8 burn out.

Yep - zero.
Gordini

I bet its bigger than zero, think how many cateram knocks off there are, theres already lancia stratos (alfa based) kits, rs200 kits (scooby based) and a few others, so theres obviously a big market for kit cars and a market within that for rally cars, and the 6r4 is just abous as iconic as they get (allong with original quatros, RS200s, delta integrales, stratos etc).
In the meantime its a difficult decision;
Which 80's hatch untill 106 rallye's become classics................
And JP15 or fisher fury for the weekend.............
Anyone got a picture of the R5 Turbo homologation special (looks like the 6R4)?
Actually, I still have a thing for the Clio V6...
Karinofnine - hell yes!
Never going to lose control in a Pug?????? as long as you didnt lift in a corner
That might explain why my mate crashed his twice, second time writting it off. Funnily enough on a fast corner. 😕
I guess I was a better driver than him as I never came close. 😉
Or was I just slow!! 😳
I always wanted one of these, think the phase II started 1986?
A mate used to have one of these back in the day. Its turbo was vicious. Mind you the 11 turbo was appalling for turbo lag!
Hmmmmm, clio V6 with 6r4 bodywork, that could be a bit special.............................
Yup, RS200's got to be the best car so far on this list - although if you prefer your mid engined turbo rally cars a little more French, you could always have -
Personally, I don't see how a car designed purely for racing, and only ending up on the road for homologation purposes can count really? Moreover, hot hatches were meant to be "cheap" and cheerful, an everyman kind of sportscar if you like - stuff like the RS200 doesn't really fit that bill, does it?
loads were crashed by people who didnt know how to drive.
[puts hand up]
Pennines: 1
Me: 0
😳
Edit: loads of memories ^^ there:
Delta: Dad had one but not an Integrale 🙁
XR2: Bro had one - loved it
Golf Mk 1: I had one
Pug 205: I had one (see above)
Renault 5: Mate had one and scared the crop out of me 😯
Gordini: Saw a girl who had one for a while - she was a bit nuts but a great shog. Don't remember much about the car 😕
Nickhart here you go
there were a few made, originally by Woods and picket I think apparently one of the first was for Ringo Star so he could get his drums in.
hmmmm
has to be 6R4 (impractical for everything), or the Itergrale for something a bit more practical for me though
Heres the ones I owned at the time,
Ones I would have liked to own

My hot hatch was a '79 Chevette HS, one of the original 400 made for homologation purposes, started life as a road car, then prepared for rallying, both road and stage ...... happy days 🙂
One of these ...
I'd stick to Kylie. Cheaper insurance and even hotter than those cars. 🙂
Hmmm, I know the VED 'classic' status cutoff date stopped advancing when it got to ~1978 or thereabouts, so 80's cars don't qualify for zero tax. Is insurance different?
I'd be interested to know cos I got an '87 AX (which is shortly to become a track car)
Militant - only pre-71 cars have free tax.
I owned a Renault Gordini turbo.
It was if I remember correctly, very fast and very expensive on the insurance.

Exactly right. I had a MkII 8V, a MkII 16V, a Mk IV 25th Anniversary, and currently running a Mk V R32. I quite like hot Golf's. I also had the XR3i with the big rubber wing - orsum wiked until I saw the light with the first Golf
I had the 205 GTI 1.9 for a couple of years, fantastic car.
then in a moment of late 30's madness bought a mint AXGT and had LAD in morcombe tune it, bloody hell it was quick but awful ride and nearly made me deaf! 🙁
spent my teens and early 20's lusting over most of this thread.
keep em coming
Oh, and it 's for sale if anyone is interested.
Always thought the 8v was the better motor and cost less. More grunt off the bottom but lets be honest both motors were very good.

Mazda 323 4x4 Turbo. Had 2 last one modded to 189bhp, and stripped for trackday fun. Got it seriously light for a 4wd, really safe to drive too.
Loving the Sunbeam , Ti or Lotus?????? , ran 2 Ti's , by christ thirsty as but mucho fun. Black with silver stripes and lotus decals got me stopped by the fuzz (alot)
fail

I had a Nova GTE, it went like stink, what a great great car that was

I am a little bit jealous. Every so often I think about getting a Delta because its a hatchback it must be practical right?
p.s. Sorry for posting a picture of a 90's car 😳
Fiat did an Abarth version of the Strada that was meant to be nuts, dont think they ever imported it.
I know a girl called Dana Humphries, her dad was one of the guys that built the 6r4 in Cowley. Amazing machine, the other stuff built by Leyland comp department was just as mad, twin engined Maxi 😯 all sorts of Marinas.
Hmm...looks suspiciously like:[url=My mechanic's got this disintegrating on his farm...
And not a single picture of the best hot hatch, ever.
And not just my opinion, but Ari Vatenan's!
Many years ago I was staying in a hotel in Chester and went for a sauna. A blond geezer came in, and we started chatting. He asked about work and the usual stuff, and then what car did I drive (at this point I still hadn't worked out who he was).
A 309GTI says I.
Great car, my last employer gave me one, best handling hot hatch around, says he. At that point it suddenly twigged who he was. And I apologised.
Not a problem, says he. We are in the bar later, come for a drink.
I walked into the bar later, Ari looks up and shouts "Bruce, over he".
I was 10 feet tall.
Drank with him and the Subaru team all night, along with a miserable Scot.
I also had an SD1, a BX 16 valve and a Mi16 - now grown up, with a 535i 😆
Lol @ Aristotle.
I cant believe all these posts and no mention of the MK 11 Astra GTE
I remember a mate getting a new one as a company car in 1986.A few months into his ownership 4 of us piled into it & headed down to Wales to spectate on the Welsh Rally. On the way back up north,Sunday afternoon on the M5,said mate tried to get the magic numbers 125 to show up on the digital speedo. After what seemed like ages stuck on 124,we finally achieved it!
That was with the 1.8 engine too,I believe the 2.0 16v ones went like sh1t off a shovel..
Ha ha I forgot about the digital dash!
Yep the 2.0 16V was really quick.
Sorry, can't stop laughing at the maestro, what were they thinking?
Citroen XM 3 litre V6 24V
Handles as well as an Elan in a slalom test
I had an MG Maestro! It was actually quite a nice car...
Also had a Citroen ZX Volcane, but that's 90's, so won't be appearing here...
