What's your take on it then op?
I would have thought any one of sound mind be in agreement really.
Until someone starts taking this seriously it will unfortunately continue. Arrests, life bans, games being abandoned, clubs losing points, matches behind closed doors etc should be implemented in my view. As soon as the majority get short changed by the minority things may change, too many people ignore it but if 10s of thousands start losing their saturday afternoon entertainment because of some idiots these idiots will soon be found out and the authorities can then apply the necessary justice to them.
Hmm... reeks of spreading the blame (or at least, the responsibility) a bit.
The government isn't going to do anything, that would require some form of control over the press (hasn't Levenson 2 been cancelled as part of the new Tory regime?). Would also require them to at least reign in some of the anti-EU rhetoric although I'm not sure I really buy that this is responsible for any increase in racism at football grounds.
Perhaps government should be funding the police better, so they can more easily pursue cases of racism, but I kind of feel football clubs should be employing their own security of sorts and just making it much less easy for offenders to get away with it without punishment.
@ads678 I think we’re in a very sad state when the direct actions of our own government, and in particular the PM, are leading to an increase in racial tensions and xenophobic behaviour. I think the FA are dead right to be calling them out on this and wish everyone else in the country would too. However, as others have pointed out, with our national press run the way it is, by the people who own it, I don’t hold out a lot of hope for any change soon.
PS. Sort for any/all typos, not sure I should be walking and posting at the same time.
Not often I agree with Gary Neville....
Have to disagree, monkey chants and banana throwing were all happening before Brexit! FA is just looking to minimise their own responsibility/cost by claiming it's somehow the government's fault.
Why has the FA not used tannoy announcements and threats of stopping games before now? The racism has always existed.
Expecting a Tory govt to do anything about looking down on people of another race is irony.
They're not racist though, they simply regard all who are not them as the unwashed masses. They'll get more worked up over the rough treatment of a horse than the early death of a terminally ill DWP client whose UC has been withheld.
Statistics compiled by football anti-discrimination campaigners Kick It Out suggested there had been a 43% increase in racist abuse in English football in 2018-19 from the previous season.
Big increase on the face of it, but is this down to racism becoming more acceptable in some quarters in our troubled times - or more instances being reported because it's gained a higher profile and become less acceptable? Or a bit of both?
Maybe a Government inquiry isn't a bad idea actually.
Maybe a Government inquiry isn’t a bad idea actually.
The Government of go home vans, the Windrush scandal, an openly hostile policy for even legal migrants, a racist prime minister who used and escalated racial fear and prejudice for his power lust, who has frequently written racist articles, revelled in using racist language and built a career lying about "forigners".
These are the last people anyone should trust on race issues.
