I'm starting to think my little wager on the Netherlands might not be so daft.

Looks like Austria Turkey might be a humdinger and the ref is not blowing willy nilly.

The Turkish goalkeeper Mert Gunok save, was something to behold. Worth a second watch.

I think it was reminiscent (not that I’m that old).

Astonishing save and at such a critical time.

Plenty discussion on here (900 comments) and an idiot proof slider to state your own view vs Banks

Like Gordon Banks, but in the last minute in the pissing rain to take your team through to the quarters.

What a game, credit to both sides. Netherlands/Turkey is going to be exceptional. And then whoever wins that plays the Swiss, another enticing prospect.

No, Banks was better. As a last minute action to win the game, Mert's was a bigger save undoubtedly, Banks meant a 1-0 loss wasn't a 2-0. But Banks was further away as a starting position, the ball was lower and more in the corner - the only thing Banks had that was 'easier' was because of where the play was (Banks at near post, Pele at far) the ball could only really ever go to his right. Mert couldn't commit because the header could have gone either way.

After the overnight activities we are back to the main event. Chances at both ends already.

Think I'd put the winner of this as favourite to lift the trophy.

No, Banks was better.

Supposedly, Bobby Moore said " you're getting old Banksy, you used to catch those"

This is a tough watch. Two cagey sides, despite the attacking quality.

for all the quality and "aren't France exciting", they haven't scored from open play in about 5 games now. Which is a fairly major part of the game.

Yep, the quality has fallen off the back of the truck. Hugely athletic but no idea where the 'net is. I'm ancient enough to remember the French 1984 team - they were something.

so much fannying about on PKs; no-one takes a shot in open play or even a free kick like that. Just put the ball down, run up, kick it in the corner. All this stuttering and stopping shite.

Maybe international football is shite and Binners was right all along. Combination of tournament football, fear of losing and players knackered after long seasons to blame? Looking forward to the return of the domestic leagues and the Champions League.

The problem with international football is the players are knackered and would rather be on the beach. But if you don't elect to support one of the big and successful clubs then supporting your country is the next best thing. Plus it's not pay walled.

Yeah, not really enjoying this tournament, bar watching Spain, thought Portugal worked the ball well but Ronaldo is just not at it anymore, was a man down for large spells of the game with him up front, as for France, they just have so much talent but struggle to take control of the game, thought Mbappe was a bit rubbish, can't believe he got subbed instead of staying on for that last 15 minutes, not even sure how he's captain ahead of others in that team.

Well I did mention the Greece win in 2004 as a template for limited quantity and which bored it's way to title but England and France are certainly giving them a run for their money.

That was exactly my thoughts on watching another absolutely awful France performance that they somehow managed to win. They're going to do a Greece and bore their way to another title.

They even made a turgid England look expansive and creative.  Can you imagine how awful a France v England game would be? Footballing Mogadon

At least playing our creative players in better positions - risky to change the system that (results say) have worked but maybe it will enable the best to come out of them.

not a discouraging start, to be fair, Foden on the ball in central areas far more often already. It would be brave from the start but Trippier's right footedness is an issue, Gordon in that role is a different proposition, same as Saka has been on the right.

Much better game. Not sure how much is England playing better and how much is not playing against a parked bus.

Saka doing some damage on the right. Just needs a good run into the box

Kane reminds me of Ronaldo last night. Not mobile enough anymore. Trippier definitely a square peg in a round hole at left wing back! Give it to Saka.

Rice is great at what he does, but if I was uber-picky I'd like one more thing. I know his role is a defensive midfielder, and I know the pundits said he hasn't been as effective for England because he doesn't have the movement ahead of him - but just once or twice getting the ball and driving a few yards to see what can open up would just ask a slightly different question.

Trippier definitely a square peg in a round hole at left wing back!

Gordon

A better performance, but the subs need to come before England have faded, and  allowed the opposition to take control and score.

Hate penalties, mainly because certain media tend to crucify certain  penalty missers. Must admit, I was very relieved to see some of them go in.

Five good penalties 🙂

That looked a happy team at the end - all good there

(Apparent'y Southgates 'won' more knockout tournament games than all other managers since 1966 put together.  Maybe he's not a woke, lily livered idiot holding back a team of plucky blokes)

That's going to worry all the others in the last 4. England used to be known for being bad at penalties so the opposition would play for the draw and win the shoot-out. That's not looking such a good strategy with the current England crop.

Maybe there will be an expansive game of football in the semi-final won in regulation time as a result.

England v Holland, two teams more than capable of a 0-0 draw despite awful defending. Koeman was pretty average as a defender and it shows with this team. We're in Kilkenny, we watched the England game in the pub with an England supporting Irish barman and now we're watching the Dutch game with some Dutch fans back at the campsite. Great fun.

Koeman was a great player, he got Graham Taylor sacked for hauling down a striker in USA 94 qualifying.

Without him there would've been no Terry Venables Euro 96.
