Another travel type question.
Were staying not far from Dolgellau next weekend and would like a couple of places to eat.
Nothing overly posh, good pub grub or bistro type stuff would be fine.
Dolgellau or Barmouth is fine as Mrs Lunge will be driving anyway!
The George at Penmaenpool was refurbed last year, supposed to be good, not been in since it was done up. Always enjoyed The Last Inn in Barmouth just as you come into town. Not sure if the curry house in Dolgellau will be open, they only use to open weekends IIRC. And there's the Mawddach Restaurant just off the island as you head to Barmouth from the A470.
Y Sospan in Dolg is pretty good.
Was there a couple of weeks ago.
Forget the George, staying near to it right now - it's awful. Y sospan or the Last Inn as stated above are better.
Just make sure get brunch and/or coffee and cake at https://www.lonelyplanet.com/wales/north-wales/dolgellau/restaurants/th-roberts/a/poi-eat/1319064/360976
One of only two UK cafe’s I’ve tried that I’ll go out of my way to visit. Other is The Quarry Cafe in Mach.
Sad to hear bout the George tho. Last time I tried to visit for a bevvy was cycling past and it was closed for refurb. So had to ride on to Dolgellau. Got a pint of Purple Moose Elderflower Ale at The Torrent instead. Epic beer. Struggle to recommend evening food in the area tho.
Gatehouse Steakhouse looks good for a laugh
^^^ wow 😳
The tapas place in dolgellau, very good
Isis on the quay side in Barmouth, is good i assume it's open
The George is better for the refurb. It's perfectly acceptable tbh - food is on the better side of good (it's not gourmet).
My problem with it is that it's a Robinson's pub and I don't like their ale.
Robinsons are sewing up whole towns in North Wales, which is a crying same (and IMO should be illegal).
Robinsons! No!!!! And as for that 'customers' feedback - just wow, and look at their spelling!
I note the Gatehouse's Tripadvisor page now has many positive reviews mocking 12 minute waits. 🙂
If you can get a booking, I believe they are re-opening this week.
I can thoroughly recommend Salt Marsh Kitchen in Tywyn and you get the added bonus that the Barmouth to Tywyn road is a stunning drive.
Off to Barmouth on Saturday for a week so thanks for starting this thread lunge. Salt Marsh kitchen looks great.

Indeedy +1 from me but I'll be buggered if I can remember the name of the place.. Tafarn Y Gader according to google
There’s a decent hat trick to be had on a bike if you can fit all three into a day. Finish with a drink on Barmouth harbour or a sunset sit back along the trail, depending where yr staying/yr vehicle is located.
Cader Idris = the crown
T H Roberts = the crown jewels! (cake, coffee, rarebit, fryup etc...)
Mawddach Trail = the coast

Two out the three are great but I'd give Cadair a miss on a bike, good walk up on any of the footpaths but bridleway isn't worth the effort IMO.
Might not be what you're looking for but we've had fish & chips in Barmouth that were superb - from the place just a bit back from the front by the bumper cars (if they're still there?)
The mermaid fish and chips in Barmouth.
If you have a road/ gravel bike ffordd Ddu from cregynnan lakes to birds rock/ castell y bere is a must.
And Dyfi bike park of course - bendigedig
From Barmouth, you're only ~11 miles from Ffordd Pen Llech in Harlech, steepest road (or is it second steepest now after an appeal?) in the world.
