Found a year old link that wont let me add to it now, so just starting another.

20th wedding anniversary next week and ive been put off warwick and its castle, so turning my attention to chatsworth house.

my mate says theres a lovely walk from baslow along the river to chatsworth (which handily cuts out the parking charges), so are there any recommendations for that area?
i think ideally we'd like to stay in a nice village with walking distance to a pub/restaurant with lovely food so we can have a few drinks too and not have to drive back.

i believe the christmas markets finished, so do they have a decent light show this christmas, or is it all a bit meh and we should maybe look elsewhere?

thanks

if you can get a table (tricky) you could go to Rafters in Ashford on water. michelin esque.
Fischers in Baslow is actual Michelin stared i believe
theres a nice/pricy pub/restuarant at the bottom in Beeley.

unless you're looking for more 'natural and rustic nice pub place?

open to all suggestions really. i think a lovely pub with roaring fire and top food is more us than michelin stuff tho to be honest but it may make a nice change.

Baslow Hall is really, really good, and not Michelin-starred stuffy, if you know what I mean.

Baslow has some nice pubs with proper fires. Can't remember which one was best though, but there are only about three of them!

Thornbridge brewery Tap is just on the outskirts of Bakewell too. Very rare to have food options though

True, but it is one of the places where you do actually get what you pay for.

well, ive provisionally booked the prince of wales for evening meal, menu looks good without being OTT (for us), plus some of the others had dress codes which although we'd be smart casual, made us think it might not really be for us.

any experience of the POW?

just need to book the accommodation now, all links seem to point at the cavendish/devonshire all being owned by the same people i think with places at baslow and pilsley. again, pricey but may have to plump for whats available as most rooms arent for our date.

thanks

yeah shame we've missed the market but the lights should be enough to keep us happy.

thanks

If you are looking for a few places for evening meals and you don't mind driving, the Packhorse at Little Longstone is very good for high end pub food and real fire.

Last time I [s]went[/s] tried to go to Chatsworth House at Christmas - probably 2017 or 2018 - I balked at the 1.5 hour queue to get in the house proper.

EDIt: I see they do timed tickets now, that would make it a lot more tolerable.

Yeh we went a couple of weeks ago on timed tickets. hardly anyone was in the house. We had a lot of rooms with just our family in. WE didnt get to see the light show as it was the day it snowed so they closed up early but have given us tickets to go back and see it the first week of January.

that looks good konagirl, thanks for that. ive tried contacting the nearby accommodation, but one doesnt do 1 night stays, and the other hasnt got back to me yet. might be one to stick in my back pocket for a few nights stay sometime.

yes, timed tickets now which should be easier.

cheers

Devonshire Arms in Beeley is very nice for food and somewhere to stay.

Plus one on Devonshire Arms. I'd suggest looking a bit further out at the Royal Oak at Hurdlow, but they've been cut off a couple of times with snow in the last couple of weeks.

Cavendish Hotel is very very nice and a decent eat. Fischers is I think closed at the moment but it is an excellent restaurant and Baslow Hall is a lovely place to stay also.

Can't go wrong with either if you can get in. May be a stretch at short notice though.

Chatsworth House itself is amazing - well worth a look around and if the weather is nice then t he gardens are stunning too. Odd, I don't remember timed tickets even a couple of years ago. We just rocked up and went in.

Bakewell for pudding is a must and there is a really decent chippy in Matlock along with the odd but immense hologram museum 🙂

You could come & stay in Hathersage. The George has just been renovated and is great both for food and accommodation

I live in Barlow - mentioned up there ^^ - Peacock is better for food than Tickled Trout but is more gastro pub than traditional pub. For that you want the Royal Oak a mile or so along the road in Millthorpe.

I've been here. It was okay but not amazing for the money. I've been to better posh eats.

I like the eric byrne campsite just up road below birchen edge but it might be a bit fresh this time of year. If you do go, make sure you find the actual camping field and not just camp in a likely looking spot otherwise hilarity ensues.

We were there a couple of years ago in the camper. You can also walk off road from the house to Bakewell

We ate in Charlie's, food was first class

Coming back the other way the Maynard at Grindleford is very good and they have accommodation

Tried to get a table at the Devonshire but never managed as it was heaving every time we tried
