Can anyone point me to music that is innovative in say the last 20 years
Thanks you
I could point you to loads, but I don't think you'd like them. 🙂
I'll bump the Tune Association Thread. Start at page 1..
probably not your bag, but in the 90's the Warp 'family' did some daft but listenable and 'new-at-the-time' stuff: Aphex, Boards Of Canada, Plaid/Black Dog, Squarepusher.
Whether I like them or not I'd like to be amazed 😀
By innovative I mean Eno or Wendy Carlos - ahead of their time
DezB Just start listing them. From 91 onwards... go...
@julianwilson - if you're into the Boards of Canada have a listen to Solar Bears - She Was Coloured In.
If only I had the time to waste.
In 200 years time Richard D James will be considered a visionary.
I'm going to add this to "little things that annoy me but shouldn't"
People who don't think there's any good/innovative/interesting/blah blah/music ain't like it used to be no-one's talented anymore whatever dla blah boring arhgh hooha ledzepare the best ever, ooh they don't right em like they usedto graciefieldsehnever been toppedlets goout to a ballroomsexppistoosl?rubbsihmatesean rydercan'tsing wherehaveallthe SONGWRITERSgone wibble widge humhumhurrahchimchimenychimchimcheroo"
Then Why The FRIDGEMAGNETS can't I stop finding/downloading/buying new music eh?!
@julianwilson - not much of the output of those listed would I say were unlistenable (well, maybe Confield by Autechre, but Chiastic Slide is a work of amazing beauty).
I struggled more with the likes of the No Neck Blues Band.
There you go, plumber, No Neck Blues Band - Sticks and Stones. It's modern improv music (but I can see how it takes its roots from the likes of Ornette's Coleman's Free Jazz and Sound of Things to Come).
If people think Arcade Fire is innovative, they've lead a very sheltered musical existence..!
DezB - like the chicks on speed track quite a lot but can't see anything innovative in it - still the same TR box drums after 20 years?
theres gotta be something out there
You got to page 30 already?! (C.o.S was just to bump it)
No Neck Blues Band - Sticks and Stones
weird and interesting but innovative?
Arcade Fire?
And I don;t think I've had much of a 'sheltered musical existence'.
I do think jazz is shite though, albeit innovative pretentious shite
Jazz seems to be misunderstood in the current climate of 4/4 and 1/4/5 ness
Keep going 🙂
How about Flying Lotus, Burial, Amon Tobin, Dalek, Eskmo, Subtle, TV On the Radio, The Naked & Famous, Justice, Debruit, Alex Smoke, Four Tet, Glitch Mob, Samiyam, Tobacco, Baths... and they're all from the past 2 or 3 years
but innovative?
Harder judge 20 years after the band started, but possibly. I know what you mean.
20 years ago will get you jungle/drum & bass. You'll also cover the likes of grime.
Trouble is, so much of everything can be said to have been influenced in some way by what went before, making it hard to claim anything is sufficiently innovative to be unique.
If we take innovative to mean pushing the envelope further than anyone else was, then I reckon there is plenty out there.
animal collective, erland oye/whitest boy alive, menomena, james blake, caribou
Anti Pop Consortium
(nice one Phil 🙂 )
Blue Sky Black Death
dare i say Radiohead? or have they been around longer than 20 years? Or maybe not obscure enough form this thread?
In 200 years time Richard D James will be considered a visionary.
+1
Can't think of many others though, nothing really groundbreaking...
Blue Sky Black Death - Days Are Years
listened to this, whats innovative - reverse delay/samples?
I still love this though
They've done loads of stuff. I listed a bunch of other artists!
Anti Pop Consortium - not for me
Just started to listen to Gill Scott Heron this week, I know it's pretty old but really good stuff!
what does innovative mean in this context? something that doesn't sound like something else?
The problem is I think that Pop/ Rock/ Jazz / Dance music are all now very mature forms - all the big advances happened 40/50/60 years ago
Music continues to evolve - but in small ways year on year. It's unrealistic to expect big noticable advances from individual artists.
Doesn't mean we can't stop listening to new music though - all that matters to me is if I'm enjoying listening to it or not
Love Arcade Fire - but they're the Blue Aeroplanes with singing. Not revolutionary (but still brilliant).
Only one big new thing since Elvis.
Hip Hop/Rap
Only one big new thing since Elvis.Hip Hop/Rap
Erm, go and look up Todd Rundgren, the chap that pioneered the usage of synthesizers and effectively started the dance music revolution in the 60's. Hip hop and rap are direct ancestors and he was well after Elvis.
It's unrealistic to expect big noticable advances from individual artists.
Elvis, Hendrix, Mozart... It is inevitable that someone will make a huge jump again to a world we can not conceive at the moment, you will make a lot of cash if you can guess what.
Most innovation in music has been driven by new technology. Go invent something relevant and it will happen.
Surely there must be space for Orbital - Leftfield - Chemical brothers - The streets - Underworld - The Prodigy - Arctic Monkeys - LCD sound system - Wild beasts - Metronomy - White stripes.... anon
Another vote for four tet, and quantic soul orchestra are ace
