How do you stay sane living up here? It’s so, so beautiful.
I’m up in holiday again, staying at a friend’s house in Ellington, and driving around here and there. But even just taking two of my kids to the beach this evening was a stunning experience.
I love my home in Wales, but Northumberland is one place that I could otherwise happily call home.

I grew up in Sunderland so this is the only part of your post that rings true.
When I went to the beach it was to see if there was any new burned out cars to play in, or dive into the water from the sewer pipe.
I was born in Ashington which is right next to Ellington, until I moved away from there in 1999 I really never appreciated how beautiful it is once you pass Ashington.
I hope you're getting the gist of the pityacker speak...
It is fantastic, but as sharkattack mentions its not all like that.
There is some bad bits.
But most of the Northumberland coast really is stunning
Yup it is pretty special. I drove out to Boulmer this am to watch the sunrise whilst on a break and checking emails. Never get bored of the views.
it is an epic place to live! so epic in fact that I commute every week down to Hampshire to spend my weekends there.
I'm from Wallsend so the grimy industrial bit of Tyne & Wear before you get to to Northumberland.
Never return to my home town but can't get enough of Northumberland - both coast and country.
Most recent trip was last October staying at Reedsford near Ford and Etal.
Hope to be back later this year.
I'm from down sarf went to Sunderland Uni, wasn't active then like now, was yet to get into cycling and mtb. Think the most active I got was one very drunken night in Penshaw deciding to walk home. Woke up in a field at dawn and walked back to Sunderland following the river.
Hope to go on holiday to Northumberland at some point in the future, will definitely revisit Sunderland for nostalgic reasons.
Coming from a less than salubrious town in the North west to the North East via Oxford I have found a few things to keep me going!
I now live a few miles from the Beach, a short trip to the Toon and a couple of miles from some decent trails and an extensive network of quiet disused railway lines and roads of the north Pennines.
Houses are cheap as well.
I was born and raised in rural West Yorkshire, which is a beautiful part of the country to grow up in. Then in my 20's I decided on doing a very long (10 years) tour of the world. When I eventually came back to the UK I decided to buy a house in Hexham, Northumberland as it's an absolute stunning county with so much wilderness to get lost in.
Moved just north of Newcastle 3 years back from the South Coast. I hate it, just no one around, awful repetitive stunning scenery, quiet roads (mostly) etc......
Seriously though it's great although a lot windier up here.
@captainclunkz - I was in C*ck Wood week before last, I have never see ants nests/hives that high nor so many of them, ridiculous! Went off to ride the river down to Diptonmill then my crank fell off and I had no 10mm allen key so gave up, was going to explore the wood more at the end
I've lived most of my life in County Durham and absolutely love it. There are pretty places all over the country but I do feel lucky to live in the North East. Teesdale and Weardale are particularly nice but as said further up the thread Northumberland (esp the coast) is gorgeous. And of course Teesdale is home to the best eye tests a man can get!
@dlr yeah the ant hills are impressive. I build and maintain most of the DH/jump trails in Cock/Duke's Wood. It's pretty vast and a lot of trails are very well hidden but I'll gladly give you a tour sometime.
@captainclunkz thanks might take you up on that if I ever get the parts delivered to fix my bike lol. I went through a couple of years back and did some of the runs, looks like felling work was done recently. I go out on the moors south of you quite a bit.
Teesdale and Weardale are particularly nice
I was lucky enough to live in Middleton-in-Teesdale for a few years. Lovely spot.
