2 Questions in 1 Topic you lucky people!

Last year I lost 2 days of work trying to recover files after a power spike and outage. I'd quite like to get an UPS to protect my PC from surges and give me a couple of minutes of power to save and shutdown properly. Anybody use anything like this at home or work that could be suitable? I've had a brief look online and APC seem to be popular.

Also, I've got a portable hard drive which is used for massive simulation files and other work like word docs, excels, ms project, etc etc. It's a real pain when I haven't synced files properly and end up with a mixed back of updated and old work. Has anyone got any free software for syncing files that they'd recommend? Obviously reliability is my number one concern, so has anyone used something they're happy with?

Cheers all! Thanks in advance.

What OS are you using?

Synctoy works for various Windows versions

SNV or GIT for syncing files.

Tortoise SVN is quite easy to use (windows), don't know the best for GIT

downloaded and run Synctoy, thanks! I had a look at Tortoise SVN and it didn't look particularly user friendly, the about page was another language to me. Thanks for the suggestions!

If anyone has experience of UPS's I'm still looking! Cheers

I've been using a Belkin 1200VA UPS for the last 3-4 years. It'll run my main server, Gb switch, router & a 17" monitor for about 20 mins which is enough for most outages. It connects to the server via USB & the server runs a daemon that shuts everything down cleanly about 5 mins before the batteries are exhausted.

APC are very good but quite pricey. I've had some cheap ones from EBuyer before and I was always dubious of the stated capacity, as it seemed much much lower, and also the software was unreliable.
