So it was the steam that set off the fire alarms? Not the pile of smoke that was streaming from it as went past my house yesterday afternoon?
*Nerdy steam lover alert*
Steam locos will produce huge amounts of steam when sitting idle as excess pressure from the boiler blows off, often straight upwards very loudly. When moving and working hard the exhaust blast through the funnel sucks hot gases through the boiler from the firebox and the exhaust steam will be mixed with thick coal smoke.
If its making black smoke then its being over fired, the smoke itself should be light grey and almost invisible. Little and often is the rule!
But that vast majority of stuff coming out of the chimney will be exhaust steam (if its being fired correctly!).
Everyday is a school day. Thanks. 🙂
