My wife (not the most confident solo traveller) is flying into Bergen early on a weekday evening. Any advice for the easiest way into Bergen itself on public transport?
Seems to be plenty of options, but grateful for any "boots on the ground" experience.
Well the airport is small and friendly and everything is very simple plus English seems to be the main language. Buses into Bergen generally seem easy but watch for suffixes to route numbers as they can indicate limited stops for example. Guess how I know! Main town centre is all in walking distance from central bus station with several high level land marks to orientate yourself.Â
easiest way is the airport bus. Flybussen.
takes 30 mins. costs about 150 Nok.
I'm not super familiar with Bergen, but live in Oslo - looks like the airport bus is a 30min journey into the centre of Bergen.
Taxis are super expensive in Norway but the exchange rate is very good at the moment so that might also be an option.
Everyone speaks very good English so she won't have any problems getting help with directions.
Also, don't bother getting Kroner notes or coins before she travels, credit/debit cards are accepted everywhere!
Be prepared for rain. Once upon a time I went to work for a while in Bergen university. When I arrived they gave me an umbrella with the university crest on it. I thought that was an unusual gift. I used it every single day.Â
Cheers, all - on a topical note, I've always found STW a brilliant resource for this sort of advice.
There's a tram into town as well, down some stairs just outside the main entrance/exit. Takes a little bit longer than the bus (45 mins?) but might stop nearer where she actually needs to be. If you use a contactless card with the ticket machine that just becomes your virtual ticket
We flew into Bergen a few years ago and just jumped onto a bus. It was very easy.
Also the advice about not bothering with Kroner is good.Â
Make sure they are activated for international use. Have seen people come unstuck with this, then struggle to activate as they are already overseas...credit/debit cards are accepted everywhere!

Now this may be my aging memory but i seem to recall that once we got to Norway we found everything was in Euros?? Or am i just a delusional fantasist?

Bybane , or bus if it isn't working. Tram direct to town
Â
I use NOK kroner when I go to the shops but I don't live in Bergen. Don't bother getting cash.Â
Sterling WISE card if your bank card doesn't offer a good conversion rate. If time is short (card can take up to 21 days to arrive) download the electronic version to your smartphone wallet/watch and make it the default whilst in Norway.
Now this may be my aging memory but i seem to recall that once we got to Norway we found everything was in Euros?? Or am i just a delusional fantasist?Norway is Norwegian Kronor, NOK or kr locally. Has been for 150 years.
Airport shops and/or big hotels might take Euros.

So Steezysix, how do I get into Oslo? Flying out one evening and aiming to get some accommodation the night before so looking for a park and ride type thing to bus into the city on the day of the flight. Does anything spring to mind. I assume that parking isn't a cheap or easy option for someone who hates urban driving, even in the UK. We bused into Bergen from the suburbs last year and parking in Andalsnes was easy.
