I was invited to fly on the maiden voyage, but I couldn't be ar$ed ...
I like big blimps and I cannot lie.....
I was going to post the latest comic from Oglaf here but even though they are invariably silly and stuff I may get banhammered.
But it does involve a flying bum. 😀
I like big blimps and I cannot lie.....
Oh, well done.
comic from Oglaf
What the....? 😯
Ideal for cruising.
This clearly started out as a joke on someone's drawing board ("They'll never accept this design").
Is it the Behindenburg?
Oh the Bumanity!
It's crashed in landing during the test flight. Oops.
Company spokesman has said "The flight went really well and the only issue was wen we landed.". It's kind of a big issue the landing though fella.
And how is this an improvement over a plane or helicopter!?
And I've just clicked that Oglaf link - double... 😯
That's some specialist cartoon work.
[delete's history on work pooter!]
Was half relieved half disappointed by google similar image results.

New name ,Airalmostlander.
Bet that was a bit of a scarefest in the cockpit. 😯
And how is this an improvement over a plane or helicopter!?
5 day flight time. Quite good for hanging around in places.
It's crashed!
I have been in the shed that houses that thing, absolutely mahoosive, the one next door is a sound stage for movies, had all sorts of vehicles for a Harry Potter film when I was there.

Yep. Squeaky bum time. 😉
Haha Oglaf is genius, twisted, filthy genius!
And how is this an improvement over a plane or helicopter!?
Flight time is good for bubbling around Afghanistan with tonnes of sigint equipment looking for weddings to blow up.
Lionheart - MemberIt's crashed!
That's exactly how all my crashes look- slow and inevitable
And how is this an improvement over a plane or helicopter!?
See those tiny fans? I bet it's really fuel efficient.
At least it's soft, rounded and shaped for comfort on landing... 😆
There must be a joke in there somewhere about ending up on my ar$e.
It's crashed!Bummer!

Hello, is that Andrex?
We've got a marketing opportunity that we think would be a perfect fit for your company. We have plenty of space for logos and there could also be potential for extra toilet roll sales to the pilots and passengers and perhaps a tie-in with an underwear manufacturer.
We'll call you back in a few days when you've had chance to consider.
Best regards from The Airlander Team.

I grew up with airships flying over the house a few times a day. I was away last week on it's maiden voyage, but it was quite nice to see one flying over again this morning... about 20 mins before it took a dive!
Should have really run downstairs to get the camera.
That YouTube link, just looking at all of the comments from newspapers desperate to get the video. The Telegraph being the only one to offer money.

Very good also for dropping in to awkward disaster areas carrying very large quantities of relief equipment, like, say, after a major earthquake...
I don't get this thing.
If you leave your base with loads of cargo, surely you have to add more lift. In this case helium.
You bumble off to your destination, drop off your cargo, suddenly you have too much lift and have to vent helium, I presume.
Then you would be have to fly back to a base to get more cargo and fill back up with helium again.
That or they will have to carry cylinders of helium around with them..
Also where does the cargo go, in the pod at the bottom, not much space there by the look of it.
Also at the claimed max altitude of 20K ft, it isn't going to glide if there is a failure with the envelope, and it sure will travel if there is an issue with the motors.
Just looked at the film of it [s]landing[/s] crashing.
If it has a tough time getting it right, on what looks like a very calm day,it's really going to struggle if there's any wind.

Northwind yes just what I was about to say about my riding
Most boring crash video ever!

It's the new journalism.
I guess it's official now that the Wikipedia entry says "Comprising an arse-shaped airship with auxiliary wing and tail surfaces, it flies using both aerostatic and aerodynamic lift."

No - lift is generated by the shape of it moving forwards, like a plane wing. So slow down and it sinks, speed up and it floats. More cargo, more forward speed, just like a plane. It has to scoot down the runway like a plane, it just doesn't have to go fast to take off.
At least that's the way I'd assume it works based on what's been written....
Old airships also had air bladders, kinda the opposite to a submarine. If you want to descend you fill the bladder with compressed air and it compresses the helium, causing the whole thing to sink, to go up you then just let the air out.
