Got three single tube lights in the garage and want to improve the light. I know LED battens is the best idea but would new fluorescent bulbs (like for like) be brighter? Do bulbs / gas degrade with time? Two are ballast and one starter.

Looking for a simple improvement without needing to rewire as just don’t have the time currently. One is F65/80W, one is F58W/35 and the other is 1800mm long but can’t see writing.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks greybeard but are there any heathens who stick with non-LED?

Sorry, misunderstood, thought you were saying you were going for LED and wanted them to be brighter. Comments in the other thread suggest that new fluorescent tubes are brighter, somewhere I read they lose 40% in the first year, so new ones will be better (if you keep replacing them). But why would you want a solution that uses more power, produces worse light and is likely to dump mercury in the environment unless you can guarantee that they will be properly recycled when their useful life has finished?

Thanks greybeard you make a strong point. Looks like I’ve got rewiring to do!
