The carpet is in dire need of replacing in my office at home. I have a long desk a chair on castors so roll around a bit.
About 10 years previously we fitted laminate so the chair didn't ruin the carpet but the noise when I rolled across it was awful downstairs which is why we swapped it for carpet. We have had several of the annoying plastic floor protectors which either so brittle or so soft the casters dig in and they never really cover the area I roll the chair around. It relatively normal upstairs room with wooden floor boards and skirting boards on the wall but am open to most ideas.
Is there ant really good underfloor sound deadening material we can put under a laminate or wood floor?
What does STW recommend?
We have wooden flooring in our study.
Castors roll too easily, and we found that 'floor protectors' designed for office chairs didn't really work shape or texture wise, and looked a bit shabby.
We bought a very large One of these and cut it in to a T shape to fit under and around each desk. We have two of them.
It works really well, stays in place, prevents the chair rolling too much, is soft and warm on feet, comes in many colours, is a much more useful shape than a rectangle and allowed us to keep the flooring elsewhere. Also, pretty cheap.
Can't find the original eBay link, this is just the first one I found, but there are plenty available from different sellers.
I'm going through a similar process for a small home office in a newly built extension. Was thinking laminate, but want something warmer under my feet in winter. Currently swaying towards carpet tiles as a compromise between chair maneuverability and a little bit of insulation.
Given past history I'd suggest something that goes with red. Preferebly easy care. Maybe the non-slip lino stuff that operating theaters have on the floor?
It is a shame these 3d floor effects only really work from one view point

You could go full 'office at home' feel and lay commercial carpet tiles. For full effect I recommend brown tiles or blue with 10 year old coffee stains (at least I hope it's coffee).
Maximum points if you clean it with a mop and bucket of soapy water once a week like they did in one office I worked in.
Bamboo? Seen a Bamboo based laminate style looks good
I bought 2 of these about 10 months ago to protect need wool pike carpets and they have been great so far.
Plenty solid enough for smooth rolling but a grippy texture. Can't imagine them cracking any time soon.
^^ is what I was going to say.
I was so excited that I wrote a review.

Or just go with sawdust to soak up the blood
