I notice MS Flight Sim is only a tenner on Amazon. I always thought it looked pretty dull, but it might be a laugh if you can just free fly around th eplace with realistic landscapes etc.

I'd like it if it were like Google Earth but with more buldings, trees etc and better planes.

What else is there? Anything with combat in it?

FSX has a huge amount of user generated content (mods) so would probably tick all your boxes, though X Plane 10 is supposed to have more realism.

For combat I prefer WW2 era as it's up close and personal, IL-2 1946 is probably still the top dog even after all these years, again there are a huge amount of mods out there. Falcon 4 is a great jet combat sim (also despite it's age).

Lock-On looks like it could be fun if I ever get enough time to learn it properly...

I actually have Falcon 4.0 I think, bought in 1998. Does it still run on W7? If so I'll dig it out. I recokn I'll be able to run it on full detail settings by now 🙂

Also take a look at Flightgear, www.flightgear.org I seem to remember.

Well I got it to work, but it's not very good. At least, not in a VM.

Flight Sim X is good, you can mess around in a Cessna over your house, or fly an A380 to Australia in real time. Not really exciting per se, it's a simulation after all!

Aces high 2, ww2 online flight sim. You get a free two week download trail, more US players than european but quite additive.

FSX is great!
Make sure it's fully up to date and go easy on the graphics settings and you should be fine.

Superb piece of kit, 'specially if you're sad enough to have a joystick and pedals.....ahem.
Bet you a sticky bun you can't beat all the helecopter challenges.

I do like a bit of IL 2 as well - 1946 is a superb release, well worth picking up.

Steam are doing an offer until today. If you buy Rise of Flight (Best WW1 combat sim around) you'll get il-2 1946 free.

As to what is the best sim it really depends on what you want to do; DCS stuff is the best in terms of modern military and realism but requires a lot of studying for the jets; it does have a P51 Mustang module which is awesome - just going through the engine start up and taxi to the runway takes a while and the take off itself is pant wettingly scary - trying to fight the torque of the RR Merlin takes some doing when on max realism.

Falcon has forked and there are a number of continuation products but Falcon BMS is generally considered the best but you still need the original disk for the installation (copy righted libraries or something).

If I didn't have kids and a job I could happily lose countless hours to flight sims 🙂

Falcon 4.0 / F/A-18 Hornet 2/3 / A-10 Attack.

Those were the days.....

A-10 is still brilliant, despite being ancient. All the Graphsim stuff is good, but doesn't mess around - you may find you're dead before you've got your Radar in the right scanning mode 😉

Rise of Flight for WWI.

IL2 Cliffs of Dover was pretty bugged when it came out, but its been modified by the ATAG group, and is now a very good Battle of Britain specific combat flight sim, and it is a flight sim with combat in that order.

IL 1946 is a bit older, but more "complete" in temrs of maps, planes.

DCS world is free, gives you a Su-25 to play with but is massively complicated. And as mentioned you can get add ons for different planes.
