Left Liverpool for Funchal on Monday and ended up arriving 13 hours late due to bad weather which is outside of compo rules. However, on our second missed approach we got an overspeed with the flaps down which meant that when we diverted to Porto Santo the plane couldn’t take off again until an engineer had checked the plane. No engineers in Porto santo so jet2 sent another plane from Birmingham to get us to Funchal. So my question is does the technical issue with the plane mean compo should be paid?
I can't help you on the compensation, but - having flown into Funchal twice last year in very calm conditions - that must have been extremely lively 🙂 I think you should be awarded compensation just for the trauma!
How long were you waiting for the replacement plane in Porto Santo? Bear in mind, though, the delay has to be the airline's fault – if there were no suitable engineers at the planned destination, you would probably have a claim (if you were waiting for more than three hours, excluding any delay due to weather). As you didn't land at the planned destination, I think the airline company will argue it was out of their control that there were no engineers.
We were waiting at Porto santo about 7 hours. First aborted landing was into the wind as per normal but then second attempt was downwind and a gust of wind caused the overspeed according to the pilot. Interestingly the airbus planes were getting in but the 737s all diverted. Something to do with throttle approach I believe. I’m just glad we got in otherwise diversion to Las Palmas was next up. Top tip for anyone flying to Madeira go with airbus airlines.
