So, outside I have a tap very similar to this...

Unlike this picture, The tap in question is actually part of the pipework (which runs underground), and simply changing the tap is not an option.
I think taps like this were probably once the norm, and there must be a few about still, so can anyone recommend a hose connector that will fit? Otherwise I can see this being very much trial and error...
A round hozelock connector, the kind with a jubilee clip round it. Think they might come in different diameters so measure the tap.
You can get a nice brass kit to match the tap, better than plastic...

simply changing the tap is not an option.
Why not?
Freeze the pipe, saw it off, fit something useful.

While I can see that as an option, spending seven quid on a nice brass kit to do the job seems like the easy solution.

It's not a normal pipe. There's no join between tap and pipe, however the pipe itself is about an inch thick, it's not round, and it's flexible... I don't even know what it's made out of.
It would be easier to join something to the tap than the pipe itself.
It'll be lead pipe I'd imagine.
… I don’t even know what it’s made out of.
In all likely hood it will be lead.
