Definitely a pouting, the curved lateral line gives it away.

Popeye pouting. Named because their eyes bulge out when you drag them up off the bottom. Taste rubbish and boney.

I caught a Pouting (5lb 5oz) off Minehead, boat fishing which was off the UK record by only 3oz!

Closest I ever got to having a record fish & yes they are not good to eat!

😉

It is part of the cod family apparently after thinking that it looks like a cod.

Pouting can be good to eat... they need to be super fresh and filleted. Dust the fillet with well seasoned flour and fry in butter/oil till skin is crispy then put in a sarnie of very fresh bread with some little gem and homemade tartar sauce....
they don't keep well or freeze, good bait for conger tho!

Commercial Value

Pouting scavenge and feed on the seabed.

Like whiting, pouting have a newly acquired reputation as a table fish. Until recently it was rare to see them for sale but this has changed and now it is possible to buy both pouting fillets and whole pouting from supermarkets and fishmongers, where they are a cheaper (and more sustainable) alternative to premium white fish such as haddock and cod. However, many pouting which are caught by trawlers still end up being processed as fishmeal, or used to bait crab and lobster pots. They are also commonly used as a ‘filler fish’ in cheap fish products such as fish pies, fish fingers and other frozen fish products.

Bottom feeder, says it all, really.

Had a few Pout from the boat last time we were out, they all went back!
Which reminds me, I've got a charter boat booked out of Hartlepool on 7th July with a few spare places if anyone fancies it?
