we are looking at changing our sofas, and have come across empire furnishings ltd.  appear to be what we are looking for, but for much less than youd pay in a high street shop.  Anyone had any dealings, am i about to be scammed?

Do not use Debenhams.

Poor quality backed up by couldn't care less attitude. We were told basically to stop moaning as three years for a sofa to last was ok - it's two years longer than the warranty...

Having seen how ridiculously cheap sofas go at auction/Freecycle etc I'm not sure I could ever buy one new again!

Hmm buying a second hand sofa to me would be similar to buying a second hand mattress or bib shorts :p

I was about to recommend Fabb Sofs'a, until I realised they'd gone into liquidation.  Shame, ours are great and lasting well.

Imho they look a bit DFS - Trade Price!!!! Save 99.9% etc

with furniture I think you have to set your budget and then choose accordingly - no one can magically make a decent quality sofa (solid wood frames, CMHR foams, decent legs etc) and be able to be far cheaper than anyone else.

I always pick the end of a sofa up and feel it's weight and look underneath.

My choices would be Ikea, the factory shop in Preston (for the decent manufacturers I can't remember the name of) or Spingvale Leather in Rawtenstall as I I live opposite and have seen them made/know the people.

It must be terrible being you going round to other people's houses or sitting on a sofa in a coffee shop etc.

I have amazing leg muscles due to never sitting on anything I don’t own or know the full history of. Squat holds whilst watching the extended edition of Return of the King at the cinema were excruciating. Totally worth it though.

i would like to try before buying, which is why i think we gonna walk away from this, wholesale only, not even able to provide a sample of fabric where we gonna spend £800.  re-read the smallish print to see the leather is pu leather, so may fee like sitting on a bin liner, which although some may like this, we would prefer not.  will keep looking.  Our current sofas have done 12 years, and still look ok, but  Mrs Yeti wishes a refresh...

I had a sofa from Sofology recently. Price was reasonable compared to most retail places and I could go in and sit on it.

My fiance bought a supposedly good sofa from Oak furniture land 3 years ago. It's had a pretty easy life but completely knackered now - the framing is unfinished, rough pine. The joints are basic butt joints held together with panel pins lighter than you'd use to hang pictures on the wall.

So don't go to Oak Furniture land, for sofa's at least.

I had a sofa from Sofology recently.

After looking at every single sofa on the planet we ended up with one from them - it's a big thing with six legs. Rather than coming with six matching legs, it came with three sets of two matching legs (one set of which was shorter than the other two sets) and a cushion missing! Fortunately they sorted it pretty quickly and we have been happy with is since though - it appears very well made.

Wow that's a really silly attitude, personally I picked up our last leather sofa as a complete bargain, hardly any use at all. The lad was obviously gutted having to sell it for pitance, as it didn't match his g/f's taste/furnishing plans. Admitted were now in the process of buying a new one from SCS (motorised wide 2 seater), and did no investigation before buying.. one of my partners split second decisions, probably to stop me spending 3month investigating the best one.

Seeing as my last sofa lasted 20 years, I went to the same shop and bought my new one there ...

https://www.petergreen.co.uk/   it's awfully middle class, not like them chain store sales-365-days-a-week places.

Probably no use if you're not in Hampshire.

Er, you'd buy a sofa without trying it first?? That is crazy talk.

Spingvale Leather in Rawtenstall as I I live opposite and have seen them made/know the people.

*Waves*

We got ours from Springfield.

Really good stuff, made to measure, top quality, excellent people to deal with.

Not cheap, but excellent quality.

FWIW, my parents bought two handmade leather sofas nearly 40 years ago that the family are still using.  They're fine.

It’s all a gamble. I bought a pair of leather sofas from, of all places, DFS. Sixteen years later, they are still perfect.

It’s not like I treat them particularly well or anything. Just seem to have been lucky.

http://www.sofasandstuff.com

We got our sofa bed from here. Not because it was cheap but because it was the only place selling what we wanted at the level of quality we wanted. We already had two from Harvey's and once we got our money back we spent an extra grand and just got something decent. Was well worth it in the end.

We don't spend big money often but this is to last us a good while.

We bought 2x Sofasofa 3 seaters over 10 years ago - really durable, saddle-leather covering which takes all sorts of abuse including dog-claws as our hound likes to sit along the back. Every year they get a clean with saddle soap and come up gleaming. A few years ago, we ordered a matching footstool online - they called us up to say that whilst the original leather colour was no longer in their catalogue, they had found some in their store and make it to matc.h
