Just checked Faceache & have seen this update from a colleague I used to work with:

Cheap iPhone my arse, just means you can get a 32gb one for the same price as a 16gb iPhone 5s! what about the people who genuinely can't afford iPhones! what a crock!

I honestly can't work out if it's sarcastic humour or deadly serious. Jusging from comments following on from the original one, I think it is the latter.

Gobsmacked. Won't someone think of the poor people who can't afford iPhones. One wonders how they survive. Blub Blub.....

I can't decide whether to :
- ignore it and not get involved (this is winning at the mo)
- stick a comment on saying 'this is an attempt at humour, isn't it?'
- stick a comment on going along with it and see how far I can take it.

4th option (if you're not too bothered about him still being your friend)

Suggest that he must really regret not having tried harder at school/picked a shit degree/been lazy at work etc 🙂

There are people who can't afford iphones? How frightful! What kind of dystopian Dickensian hell has this country become?

Post something Daily Mail-eque such as 'All people on job seekers allowance get given iPhone 5s when they sign on'.

I blame Thatcher.....

I've heard that there are even some people who dont have any televisions in their houses! Unbelievable! Something must be done to stop this nightmare.

funnily enough the people who don't tend to be those that could most afford to have one.

it's the poor who can't really afford a telly who end up with something the size of their drawing room wall with a £100/month sky package attached to it.

I was thinking along this line, but somehow shoehorning it into the 'free lunch' scandal too!

Drawing room wall - nice one. Every one knows they put them in the library.

Saw a peach of a story on the BBC website. In there amongst the stories of war, famine and pestilence is a tale of woe surrounding the availability of the new iPhone.

I quote...

"Several networks said that stock of the latest premium model - the 5S - was severely limited in the UK, and would be likely to cause disappointment."

Disappointment! Oh please God no!!! Not disappointment.

Ahem.... I think you'll find I now have a legal, constitutional right not to be disappointed.

I shall be contacting my lawyers

I find the phrase "Aww, diddums" is good at defusing that kind of situation.

There is no irony in the fact that you have posted this banal dilema on a different social media site.

Post a pic of this phone and tell him you're waiting for this to come down in price so that us 'normal' people can afford phones made of gold. It's $50,000 now, and you've only got $25,000 that you're willing to spend on a phone at the moment.

iPhone 5s? I'm sure the Apple presentation said they were only $99, sounded very reasonable to me 😉

And anyway isn't there always wonga.com to help poor people buy things they can't afford?

On a slightly serious note, I'm staggered they can get away with stating $99 as a headline price with a tiny * next to it. You couldn't advertise a car as being on sale for $99, but with 24 monthly payments of a grand. Or maybe they do?!

Car dealers do that on autotrader constantly, but then motor traders are even dodgier than builders 😉

Phew! That's alright then.

It wasn't really the dilemma bit of my OP I was particularly showcasing to the people of STW. More my utter amazement that someone could come out this this gem:

what about the people who genuinely can't afford iPhones! what a crock!

and actually be serious about it.

The dilemma bit at the bottom was really just me filling space and was perhaps rhetorical. Waffle, if you like. A bit like this post too.
Oh and I've just noticed a speeling meestake in my OP too, which has somewhat disappointed me.

I reckon that the Tories should introduce 100% iphone tax, just to see Owen Jones and Laurie Penny go into meltdown 😀

I was going to suggest a 100% ringtone tax as well, but realised that may be open to legal challenge as disproportionately affecting the poor 😈

Not true. I heard from a friend who knew some bloke who reckoned he'd heard about this fella that had bought a bike that had cost more than what his car did. And he had to pedal it himself!!

I told him it was bobbins, but he wasn't having any of it....
