To continue our rise up to middle class we've just booked our first ever skiing/snowboarding holiday for Jan next year.

The big question is having never done anything like this before, and being 48 years old, what is easier to pick up?

Skiing or snowboarding?

Do you live near any of the uk snow centres?

If so,  then go and learn during the summer.  You will at least have a level of ability before you get out there and it will be quiet. We learned at the mk one and didn't need lessons at all.  we do get the odd refresher though when out there.

As for skiing and snowboarding,  you will get tons of answers but really you need to try.

I can do both but prefer the board as it is more fun and I don't really care about the speed as much as being able to mess around and do spins etc.

Ski's win when snow is harder and also on flatter trails.  Boards win in pow (nothing feels like it).

Skiing is easier than snowboarding at a beginner lever as the commitment to turns and speed management is less, and having your hands out in front of you may feel more natural being a cyclist. Getting round resort is easier on skis too until you can confidently flat base to clear flat sections on a snowboard.
but yes, if you can get to an indoor slope and try both on my click better, also means you don’t waste most of an expensive holiday stood at the side of the nursery slope learning how to put you’re equipment on

Boarding hurts more. You tend to stop dead having caught an edge whereas on skis you flail about dissipating energy. However the progression curve on a board is much faster than with skis.

I never ever board without wrist protectors: I’ve seen many people have holidays prematurely curtailed by broken wrists and scaphoids falling on the first days of boarding. Snow on pistes is not soft and fluffy!

Have you ever skateboarded or surfed, or do you prefer to travel forwards?

Taster sessions at one of the indoor places would be a good thing to do.  If you like one over the other then it’s well worth getting a couple of lessons. Please do not do this and then go out expecting to “just pick it up” in the resort. You’ll be a hazard to yourself and others, won’t know the etiquette and not progress very far.

Yup, that's pretty sounds archive, we've got family in Birmingham so will likely take a few trips to the Snowdome.
