Card payments not being accepted, huge queues as shops pubs, cards being refused, trolleys abandoned etc.

Some people obviously havent heard of cash.
Wrong kind of ones and zeros.

Happen about 10 years ago when I worked for a bank. Heard call centre staff had to use their own mastercards to pay customers hotel bills etc
Cash machines are vending ok apparently, although I've used contactless in the boozer tonight ok.
Seems an intermittent issue, although I withdrew some cash from a cashpoint earlier just in case.
Sounds like a typical media storm in a tea cup, either that or armageddon is upon us.
No issues here with lots of people on a day out so guess it’s a right load of bollocks.
Visa was fine when Tesco were rinsing me for £140 shopping this evening..
Not bollocks Drac. Working in retail I had about 2/3 hrs of very unhappy customers giving out to me because we could not process their cards, tried to explain it was not our fault but it seemed to fall on many deaf ears with lots of customers flouncing out, leaving their goods behind. Cost us a fair bit in lost revenue today. Seems to be ok now though so fingers crossed for tomorrow.
We had 2 that didn’t go through this afternoon one after the other. They then used a different card. Then it was ok so didn’t really think much of it.
2 or 3 hours so not quite to TSB levels by a mile.
It went down in Aldi at 2pm yesterday. Cue 5-10 mins of people tutting, then they turned off and on their terminals and it worked ok, at least for the couple of people in front of me and myself to get through. No idea if it continued to play up after.
Staff looked panicked. As no one had any idea what was happening.
Despite the dracisms, I’d suggest while it wasn’t as long lasting as TSB’s **** up, it was more wider ranging/impactful given the amount of people who have Visa cards.
My local CO-OP wouldn't accept contactless but it went through using the pin ..no way was I leaving without those beers ...
Happened to the wife when she went to collect the dogs (frozen) food yesterday. None of her cards would work. Woman in the shop took her address and telephone number and said she'd call her later for payment once it was working again.
the guy in front of me yesterday afternoon in M&S in the sneckie was mighty embarrassed when his BOS card repeatedly wouldn’t work (eventually he used his amex).
mine went through contactless ok though...
I couldn't pay for my lunch yesterday. Had to use this new fangled cash thing instead.
The problem was that people didn't know if it was their card with the issue, the retailer's system with the issue, or as it turned out the platform, so until you know what the problem is it's difficult to fix.
Couldn't pay by card in Euro car parts yesterday afternoon so have to go back in this morning to collect parts, I'm taking cash just incase.
Had to pay by cash in the Piccadilly Tap.

I do, but the several people in front of me in the queue didn't, and the till is loaded up with their purchases, so despite wanting to let live by your pithy hashtag, one just couldn't.

seems as if people today are finding out they had card declined and used another card and money that was declined has been taken and theyre now trying to get cash back onto their card.
Gimme da Cash...

^^project what I 'think' has happened to some is when they swiped their card the merchants system contacts visa to request the funds, but was declined, so merchant then asks customer for alternative payment or the person just leaves the goods etc. However the banking system still thinks the merchant is going to request this money so removes the funds from the customers account to pay the merchant, but the merchant does not complete the request because it was declined so when visa realise this they put the money back into the customers account, but this can take a few days.
We get this a lot in our shop, someone's card is declined and they ask us to try again and declined. They go to bank to see what's up and see the bank have 2 payments pending to us.....but we don't have the money due to card being declined (twice), customer gets annoyed as they think we have 2 lots of their money. Money sits in banks holding account awaiting our transaction, which never happens as it was declined, so bank release funds back to customer. Eveytime you enter your pin in to a terminal the bank thinks a transaction will be completed....so don't keep trying or you may end up waiting a few days to get your money back.
