Off to NY in a couple of weeks (the mr's big birthday) what are the must see atractions.
What kind of budget per day (excluding shopping for shoes etc )for food and getting around.
Thinking of a show.
And lastly maybe something from Chris King for myself for being such a wonderful hubby.(any good bike shops?)
There's quite a few threads on this if you use search
The obvious, statue of liberty/Ellis island is a great day trip.
Superb food in many of the "ethnic" areas such as little Italy, Cuba etc.
Had the best Chinese meal of my life in NY , better than hong kong or china.
Best bit of "inside track" is to get a big apple greater for a couple of hours on the first day, they show you the sites and issue underground tickets.
It also costs nowt.
I got a retired architecture professor from Columbia uni.

Guy showed us some cool bars and great local under the radar eating places, well worth the donation of Yorkshire Tea we gave him.
I loved the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and Grand Central Station but I am a sucker for the architecture of the period. St Paddy's cathedral is worth a look as is the Flatiron building. THB is is sometimes just worth wandering around soaking up the atmosphere.
I have done a search and have lots of ideas now thanks.
Deffo going to the Natural History Museum.
Still unsure on how much to buget for food and getting round etc?
As recommended elsewhere;
John's Pizza - 260, W44th, just off Times Sq. Epic.
Breakfast at Loeb's Boathouse in the Park - Go to the "posher" bit, on the waterfront. Also, be sure to check out the epic MAMILfest in the Park on a weekend morning!
The Met - http://www.metmuseum.org/ - One of the single greatest museums on the planet. Go. I urge you.
The blue line bus ticket is worth ago for a great hop on and hop off experience, plus you get the guided tour announcing bit as well
Gotta see all the famous bits you see in the movies - underground, Brooklyn Bridge etc, otherwise Central Park, pick a few things you want to do and just wander around and explore. You'll def want to go back.
Just looking at the NY pass, which gives you free entry on loads of attractions, and the fast track entry.
Anyone used this?
Nicely timed threads - thinking of going to NY for a few days before Christmas. Not been since '99...
Take the Staten island ferry. It's free and gives an ok view of the statue of liberty and the wall street end of manhattan. Just loop around at the other end and come straight back.
Grand Central Station is free. Great architecture and some good cheap NY food down there.
Central Park is also nice. There's ften stuff going in at weekends. Baseball or concerts and it's all free
It doesn't have to be an expensive trip.
Food wise - Houlihans are plentiful and not a bad price.
we really enjoyed Radio City Music Hall ,Guggenheim Museum and The Rockerfeller Centre are well worth a visit , Grande Central Station for cheese cake and people watching , loads of great Irish bars for beer and food at sensible prices .
NY Greeter - seconded - top.
Subway - $2.50 - 1 stop or all the way to Coney Island.
Tribeca Bar & Grill - low key top quality fodder if yo're not fretting about cash.
Any Piano Bar - whyever not?
The ticket booth on Time Sq for last minute tickets - do a show - might be top, might be hopeless, but it's funny either way.
Flat Iron building, Grand Central, Empire State, Chrysler, Radio City - iconic architecture - and it means you can watch 20% of films going - 'we've been there.'
Have a great time and do talk to folk - they seem a whole lot more welcoming than they were in 1989.
