First aid advice sought - looking after rope burn

Well!

Jr took the dog out for a walk on Monday.

An unfortunate series of events involving a 20m recall lead attached to our greyhound and an Inuit dog attached to a bicycle led to my daughter getting nasty rope burns on each of her ankles.

The local medical practice first aid telephone centre was great - provided clear instructions and put together a pack of dressings for us to collect. Ace.

Fast forward to today and the wounds seem to be healing well.

I’m after advice here because we’re hoping to go for a couple of days by the sea and I’d like to know if that will be okay, and I’d appreciate some input on appropriate choices of dressing.

I have a telephone nurse consult booked for tomorrow, FWIW!

If you scroll across the photos below you’ll see the injuries. They are not the most gory, but they are nonetheless photos of wounds. Viewer discretion is advised.

Thank you!

Really? That’s the kind of comment you think it appropriate to make?

I'm sort of familiar with rope burn (sometime climber)although IANAD. Those look to be healing well, but bearing in mind all the scare stories about sewage releases into the the sea I might be quite cautious paddling. Depends a bit on where you're going I suppose.

Ow! Ow! Ow !

I am not a medic but - that is an open wound.
You don't want anything, including sea water, getting into that.
It needs to be kept as clean as possible and encouraged to heal

Head into Boots and buy a couple of packs of the alginate dressings they sell.
Apply and keep the wound clean.

Note: Extendable leads are dangerous. Friend nearly lost a finger on getting entangled in one.

As the only picture I can see is a dog, I took it as a joke.
Actually now I can see the pics I do think it an ill advised comment, I'd use tegaderm.

Looks similar to road rash I've had in the past! On that basis, yep Hydricolloid/tegaderm/etc is ideal, but as a stopgap/alternative the nurse who looked at my RR advised cleaning the wound, then vaseline & cover in clingfilm. You just don't want it drying out (which I think is what the "proper" dressings stop happening) as it'll heal quicker & scar less if kept moist.

Yeah defo don't go in the sea with that!!

another vote for Hydrocolloid dressings. Pick the right size to get plenty of overlap on the good skin at the ends and try and avoid creases in the dressing.

Nothing much else to add - Hydrocolloid/tegaderm/etc is ideal - definitely stay out of the sea/swimming pools.

(re - swimming pools - my daughter recently had a small mole removed - we mentioned to the doctor who performed the procedure about her swimming lesson planned for a few days later - which prompted a proper rant about how disgusting pool water was and the need to keep the wound site clean for 2 weeks - she was also told to put a thin layer of vaseline on it to stop it drying out)

Tegaderm, you'll need a decent size dressing. Spray on iodine and don't go near the sea. There is a bit of a skill in applying the dressings but they are great as anyone who's had decent road rash will attest. I hope she heals soon.

Thank you all.

Turns out we already had a bunch of Tegaderm dressings after a cycling incident a few years back - thanks for the advice and for linking this to road rash!

Alginate gel and Tegaderm applied. Couldn’t get hydrocolloid dressings of sufficient size.

All seems good and we’ll see how we go over the next few days.

Your help really appreciated.

Edit to say spray iodine a great idea. I only currently have wipes which I was loathe to use at this stage of healing. Will get some.

Have you checked on what constitutes 1st and 2nd degree burns? Hard to tell if that's literally a burn or more a laceration.

If unsure it might be worth checking with 111 or minor injuries

Thank you. 111 referred us to our local first aid centre, who diagnosed by photo.

They gave us what I know know (think?) to be a two part colloidal or alginate type dressing - a pad to go on wound and then a dressing over.

Those were great for three days, and I’m booked in to speak with them tomorrow. Today’s advice has helped reassure me we’re taking the right care of it and I’ll check in with the nurse or doctor who telephones tonorrow.

Nothing useful to add, all the moist healing and don't dip it in sewage recs have been taken care of. But crikey, your poor daughter, that looks really sore.

Bloody hell, that looks painful

Personally I'd avoid the sea if it were on my kids. Salt water would sting like hell unless those dressings can somehow block it out?

My apologies then. I assumed you’d scrolled through the pictures and seen my daughters hairy ankle!

I’m clearly a bit sensitive about this as I’m currently (slowly) reading a book about (in part) tweenage/teenage girls and body image and societal pressure!

The dog’s ankles are hairy. The dogs belly is bizarrely pretty much hair free!

I think both daughter and wife would move me on before they thought of losing the dog!

Oh, I see now, if I click on the photo it's a link. Whoops, now I feel like a ***

Those burns are nasty but at least look clean. I'd normally say that salt water would help healing (that was the advice I was given when I had a badly healing wound after a minor surgical procedure, to sit in a salt water bath) But also as others said above, sea water is not necessarily particularly clean right now. I wouldn't be swimming in discharge full stop, let alone with an open wound.

Whoops, now I feel like a ***

Obvs no need - instead I can feel like one for my (over?😖) reaction. Hope day set well!

Jeez that looks nasty. As others have said for healing and covering and definitely no sea if it was me.

Your greyhound is gorgeous! Damn! We've had a couple of rescues and a couple of shades of lurcher. I still pine for another, but circumstances... 😣

We’re now not going this weekend. Will see how things look on Monday 🤞

Thank you! We got her four months ago and she just turned four yesterday! She’s our first dog and we feel so lucky! I hope one day another will be right for you. And your username! One of the many dog things I didn’t know until we got ours!!
