We want to build some kind of outdoor seating area. A fire pit with some kind of canvas awning attached to some wooden posts. It won’t be attached to the house or anything.
Inspire me with pics or recommendations.
First (and probably most important question) is what material does the awning need to be to go over a fire and how high does it need to be.
Any tips welcomed - especially if you’ve learnt some valuable lessons. If I do it without help I’m bound to set fire to something quickly…
The one we've found is that a chimney draws a fire really well, so we have a smaller but hotter and far less smoky fire.
We've just a sheltered seat.
And a view of a nearby Munro summit, just.
Yeah. Skip the fire pit.
Just about everyone I know with a basic pit has either got a chiminea of some sort instead, or pretty much stopped using it.
They don't give off much heat for the amount of wood you put in it. Smokey as hell unless you are lucky and have perfect air flow past it and you can always sit up wind, and you can't really cook on them until they've pretty much gone out.
Also, sparks everywhere. (Depending on the wood.)
My washing machine drum is mega. It looks janky as hell but my got it put out the heat and glows

Steel.
Or just cover the seat like the Outnabout cozy bench up there ^.
we got a sunsail off amazon which we have a firebowl under, probably about 7-8ft, no burns yet but if we do it was about £40
Not the best picture, but we just put up an event shelter (with side panels) over the outdoor seating and have a gas fired washing machine inner fire pit. Works a treat - no sparks to worry about with the gas one, but I've also used an open fire pit in there with no issues either

Solo stove (or the clones of it) do the secondary burn thing, gives you nice flames, decent heat and less smoke.
I'd go cotton canvas but I think once you're 8ft or so above you're not likely to burn it. You get bell tents made with fire resistant canvas so that is a thing if you're worried about it.
