I don't know how many hits they managed here in the UK, but I was just listening to them again and my goodness, they were good.
I always find it weird when musicians (or other artists) disappear for no apparent reason, especially when the world could have done with hearing from them a bit more.
Yep, very talented!
There was an interesting interview with Gift a month or so back;

One of their best
Two excellent albums.
The hi-light for me has got to be Jimmy Sommerville's backing vocals on Suspicious Minds.
Still not quite as good as Elvis' version though IMHO.
I think The Christians where in a similar vein, but maybe not quite as good.
Aye, Jimmys still knocking em out. Wee fella, big voice.
Blue is a brilliant song - and still as relevant / applicable to today as it was back then
The Good Thing video is a scootering classic.
Some awesome Lammys on it.
Joolz Holland played on that one as well.
I didn't realise that Jimmy Somerville sang with them on Suspicious Minds! He's another one... although I know more about his post-Communards post-Bronski Beat career. Phenomenal talent.
Wasn't it Andy Cox from the Beat as well?
I think The Christians where in a similar vein, but maybe not quite as good.
Yep, shined bright for a brief period then seemed to vanish.

Just an amazing voice, one of the very best.
FYC had some great songs - shame they split after only a couple of albums. Roland Gift's voice was unique and just reading this thread reminds me of its power.
I was at Hull Uni around the time Gift mentions being a punk in Hull in the Guardian article. He used to live just down the road and we'd regularly seem him walking past our house and at various punk gigs in the city. Hull was a very white city when I lived there, so he really stood out from the crowd being both mixed race and a punk. Interesting to read that he withdrew from acting and music to bring up his sons. It would be good to see him on the screen or stage again as his talent is too good to waste.

Probably disappeared up the lead singers arse. He used to sit in the Philly wearing shades surrounded by sycophants and making a big show of who he was.
The FYC had a really upbeat kind of 60's instrumental vibe, like an updated motown, they resisted the synthesised sound that was dominating at the time, and it still sounds good today, music to be happy to.
I really don't see the similarity with the christians, who's sound could nest be described as "meh" or "passive background music".
FYC at the NEC was the first live concert I ever went to. It was bloody brilliant!

Hooverville could have been an FYC track, but I know where you are coming from with some of their other stuff.
Lead singer went off to do Red Dwarf didnt he?
LOL
Red Dwarf? No, no way you could confuse Roland Gift with Craig Charles.
One looked exotic and handsome whereas the other looked like a cheeky scallywag.
I remember seeing Craig Charles doing a routine on TV (Saturday Night Live I think) - he started with "I'm Craig Charles and I am not a Fine Young Cannibal"
Well that's this mornings WFH spotify sorted.
As for the Christians.. There only the band the Lighthouse Family could have been!;)
Colour by the Christians is a cracking album and sounds great maybe the Laurie Latham touch stick it on your Spotify/tidal
Love Fyc. My 3 girls grew up with me blasting fyc inxs and erasure amongst others in car. They are all mid to late 20’s now and they too love fyc et al 🙂
It drove them crazy?
(fyc were two guys from the beat plus gift. Sparks the thought that on the rare occasions I hear them the beat were pretty good.)
A workmate used to spar with Roland Gift.
True story...
Way back in time we had tickets to see Fun Lovin' Criminals but my sister had to drop out so we offered the spare ticket to a friend. On the night - band starts up, friend looks at us and says are these the support? She was gutted as for weeks she been looking forward to seeing the Fine Young Cannibals - the look on her face was great!
...you had to be there! 🙂
I'll get my coat. 🧥
Never that keen on Gift’s voice, or Summerville’s for that matter. I think I might have a Christians CD somewhere, it’s been a very long time since I last listened to it; I might check them out on Apple Music, see if it’s worth digging the CD out.
If you need a coaster, then dig out that Christians CD!
