There's a fused switch to the left of our boiler that has always been off (moved in May). It has no fuse in it but does have supply and load wires connected. We have no idea what it connects to and as far as we can tell, there are no appliences that are not in use. The boiler has a fused switch on the right hand side so maybe it was moved for some reason.
The house is a barn conversion so all wiring is new.
Any ideas on how to find out what it connects to without causing any damage?
Is there a statue of a cow outside that sometimes changes direction?

In the kitchen? Possible isolator for an appliance that's not there, maybe kitchen layout changed after the electrics were done. Can you see behind units if there's a socket or flex outlet faceplate sitting there idle? Phone camera can be useful here.

I drilled into a live wire which was at 45* across a blank dining room wall - and was 'capped' with electricians tape and plastered in....Transpired there was a mirrored one the other end of the wall - someone had installed wall lamps at one point, supplied from the sockets down below....
The boiler was installed when the house was converted.

If the supply connections on the FCU have two cables (2.5mms) in each it'll be on the ring, but if there's only one it may have been a radial circuit that is now disused, which should be marked on the test schedule. It may also have fed a now-disused CH programmer in the airing cupboard, our house has that arrangement.
How thick are the in and out wires?

- Check that all your fixed appliances work (in kitchen, utility room and adjacent rooms).
- Check that all the socket outlets in the house work (make sure spur is off).
- Check there is no outside light, camera etc that the spur could be supplying
- Check under the floor (if possible)
- Check in the attic (if possible)
- Check above and around your boiler
- Check above your cupboards
- Check inside your cupboards
- Pop off the kick boards in the kitchen to check behind them
If all the above fails I'd either leave it or pay a spark to trace the cable. You can buy cable tracers but take a bit if experience to use accurately.

yes that’s how the regulatory body would like it. Meanwhile in the real world either are unlikely - even in a brand new house from what I’ve seen .
As a fellow barn conversion victim resident I’d suspect some elaborately incorrect heating installation that is no longer there. Night storage heaters wired to be permanently on perhaps?
@wca we had exactly those. Except they were being fed from the neighbour’s property.

As mentioned above, unless you need it gone leave it alone. Might even be useful for an extra appliance in the future.
I'd say, if you really want to know where a cable goes, start digging. Can't beat a mk 1 eyeball.
