Long shot even for STW

A close friend’s daughter is studying law and has an exchange place at the university in Leiden. She is struggling to find accommodation in what is a busy university town through the conventional channels. Can anyone suggest a not too left field search option?

Thanks, MC

Long shot my arse.

My son was there 2 years ago, ended up living in a room on a canal boat. I'll ask him how he got it.

Long shot?
used to live there.

I'd have thought the university accommodation office would be the first place to start.
Dunno if it's still the case, but when I was there, all the rental agencies were linked via a central system, so you can see all the accommodation of all the other local agencies just by going thru one of them. Forget what the website is called now.

Not just a busy university town, but most of the guys from European Space Agency, Europol, etc. live there too, and there must always be either rooms or apartments coming up for rent.
Saying that, there's only 1 recent ad on the ESA small ads thing there, and it's €975pcm for a 1bed apartment in the centre!

He says 'through Facebook', unfortunately that's as much as he can tell me. Wasted that education...

Yes, Leiden is pretty expensive.
I'd be looking at 5 miles out and cycling in. Though I'm middle aged and tight with money and dont mind cycling!
There are plenty of buses in the area too, as well as an excellent train service.

He did get a kayak with said accommodation, and walked on the canal when it was frozen.

Apparently there are a few Lieden housing/accommodation groups to investigate, he'll tell me later

Joining her course part way through the second term has proved to be a problem with the university accommodation office.

Loving the idea of the canal boat. Thanks for the updates

Shortly after my dad graduated and I was born, he got a job working for ESRO, the European Space Research Organisation.

Have a quite a few Leiden contacts at work, many of whom are finishing PhDs. Can ask around.

An ex-colleague's son is studying in Leiden at the moment. He had trouble finding accommodation in Leiden and ended up in The Hague.

I imagine that there will be a rail link between The Hague and Leiden?

yes, only about 10-15mins or so between the 2.  Delft also about the same distance (and possibly more convenient, and also a university city).
