Someone mentioned 'Rumsfeld' on another thread, and I almost heaved.

He is a man I would relish seeing arrested and tried in the Hague for crimes against humanity, instead of sitting comfortably on his porch swing in Virginia or wherever it is he infests in his retirement.

So, which figures - barring the obvious Pol Pot types - of the last 40 years can you not stand or do you think acted pretty evilly?

Blair, for the way he took us into a blatantly stupid war against the express wishes of the British people and despite the largest protest march in British history. (Feb 15th, 2003)

Haven't voted Labour since and won't until he's held accountable and I reckon plenty of people feel similarly.

Makes my piss boil just thinking about it even now.

Blair, vile, sanctimonious pusswad that he is, for the reasons stated above, and also for being the grasping, money-obsessed grinning gargoyle that he is as well.
Come the revolution, etc, etc... [img] [/img]

Tony Blair is a weasel, for sure.

But he looks like Mother Theresa next to our current glorious leader.

No he doesn't. Blair knew exactly what he was doing, Cameron OTOH, doesn't have a blind clue.

How exactly do you expect the Labour party, in opposition, to hold him accountable? Write him a stern memo?

Thatcher for anti society and support of Pol Pot , Pinochet and Suharto.
Blair for his involvement in Rendition and Torture and his rank stupidity in exploding Iraq with no plan or exit strategy .

Eh? Parliament voted for Iraq war by a majority of 263 - how is that "against the express wishes of the British people"?

As for the protest march - frankly, that's not how democracy works, the second biggest one was pro hunting, do you think that means we shouldn't have banned hunting?

However, I can't stand ZM bureaucrats where some say it is the system but I say they are all ZM.

Beginners mistake to reply to his obvious trill - he has his reply ready about representative democracy etc. He knows that it is true that the majority of the population were against going to war but that wont stop him arguing this to death

Blair the heady mix of power crazy messianic personality- really should do time

Thatcher obviously

Boris racist philanderer

Trump - he is just awful like a terrible Gervais comedy character and WTF Is that hair.

Don't know if you're aware but not all the british people get to vote in parliament.

Ok, so how does your point support the argument that Blair did anything "against the express wishes of the British People"?

the majority of the population were against going to war

Referendum was there? Oh, go on - opinion polls? well, we know what we think about opinion polls don't we children 😆

Blair - it is difficult to quantify the scope and depth of misery he has wrought on millions of people, he is the most disgraceful human being I have ever had the misfortune to meet.

This. His impact is beyond comprehension. It's entirely possible that Bush would have deposed Saddam without Blair, but he might not, and Blair certainly made it a whole lot easier for him.

It's not hindsight. 30 minutes reading a book about the makup of Iraq would have made it clear what was going to happen, and most intelligent comment at the time understood that Iraq was not a nation of homogeneous people who all got on and would peacefully sort themselves out.

In answer to the OP's post, Blair, by a country mile.

Ironically without his insane foreign policy Blair would have been seen by history as a capable administrator and absolutely first class political communicator. Mind you, that's a bit like saying apart from the murders Harold Shipman was quite a good GP.

Why would you think that?

His governments have been incredibly successful at dismantling and privatising numerous much-loved British institutions and turning the screws on the public sector.

Thatcher thought she was doing the right thing (misguided matriarch) now Tony was driven by "higher" powers (gods will and all that shit) I lived/worked through both of these people and as much as I am a socialist Blair has created most of our global woes (or at least sown the seeds) Maggie specialised in domestic woes - frankly it's not complicated it's in plain sight as they say....

Nigel Farage, I don't agree with him, but worse than that he doesn't believe half the BS he spouts, but he's a master of tapping into insecurities and making sound bites out of it.

Katie Hopkins, the latest in a long line of professional trolls.

Paul Dacre for making money playing on the fears of the stupid and confirming those fears, they're making Britain a worse place for money.

Blair for many of the reasons given above. Having followed this closely at the time, and subsequently I believe he made a promise to Bush and then manipulated the facts AND parliament to get agreement for us to send in troops.
He should be in court, but sadly probably never will.
Bush only wanted to go into Iraq as a personal vendetta against Saddam, it had nothing to do with national security or 911.

Eric Pickles... messed up Bradford, now messing up the country.

Blair, for either his utter stupidity or evil. The consequences of both are enough to condemn him regardless of motivation.

Too young to vote for Thatcher, the 80s proved a joyous decade for me of cycling and general playing with a healthy dose of motorbikes and trespassing amongst field and river of rural Norfolk.

Bush, for the same reasoning as Blair.

Cameron. I'm leaving the door open for him being a clueless moron.

Anyone involved in the leading edge propaganda fest that was last years independence referendum. On both sides! Just for a good dose of hyprocasy, I freely admit there'll be some collateral damage involved. Ho hum.

Tony Blair showed the Labour Party what it takes to win elections. Any candidate with a remote chance of being Labour leader at the time would have done the same going into Iraq. A more leftist leader would not have been elected PM so their opposition would have been purely academic

Hate is a negative energy sapping emotion.

Personally I thank Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon for totally mismanaging the Referendum ensuring a No vote and then the icing on the cake was to deliver a majority Conservative government. I thank Corbyn for the work he is doing to ensure a left wing agenda is discredited and removed from our political landscape for the next 20 years.

Thank God for that.

I flipping HATE the very idea that we should have a day dedicated to animalistic consumption following a foreign holiday dedicated to remembering how fortunate people are for having anything at all.

Utterly sick.

Fortunately, there is an alternative.

That's what made Blair cool though, he was an evil Machiavellian bastard. I quite liked that about him, I mean....Britain was cool in the late nineties and early 2000's...we had Britpop....illegal wars....Peter ****ing Mandleson....it was all so Rock N Roll.

Now we have..... Dave, Jeremy Corbyn and Mumford and Sons.

Oh OK then, let's go for everyone that says this:

jambalaya - Member

Tony Blair showed the Labour Party what it takes to win elections.

Utter bullshit. A lot of people genuinely believe it, though it took a lot of them a while to make it stick in their heads. I doubt Jamba does though you never know. Blair inherited a winning hand from John Smith (and John Major, to be fair) who inherited a changed party from Kinnock. Smith wouldn't have won Blair's landslide but there's little doubt he'd have won.

And this brings me nicely back to Blair... Because lying to Parliament and the public to get his war, that's obviously pretty bad. And despite those lies, still not being able to convince the public so just going to war anyway against public opinion, that's obviously pretty bad too. But you can say, he thought it was necessary, he did what he had to do to get the job done. History's shown just how terrible an idea it was but he at least thought it was right.

But it's the mythmaking that I really dislike, that's insidious. Blair achieved a great deal but it's not enough for him and his cultists to have won 3 elections. So, the creation myth, "He made Labour electable". And not for any good reason, but just because he wasn't happy just to be prime minister- he had to be the party's messiah.

And that myth has 2 great casualties. One, the legacy of John Smith, a man the party should remember and respect and learn from. Because if there's anything they could do with now it's another John Smith.

And 2, the identity of the party itself- its understanding of what it is and what it's for and where it comes from. Because even now that the koolaid is wearing off and many are denouncing the cult, the creation myth is still strong, and rooted in so many people's conscience is "new labour made us electable". So even while trying to get away from Blairism they're still afraid to try anything too different. Fundamentally every decision they make is on bad foundations.

So many of the problems the party has today come from Blair, and it's not just political aftermath but the impact of his leadership. Frexample, Blair's cult of personality didn't like competition and strong figures and couldn't tolerate dissent, which helped create the current vacuum at the top. And he didn't just fail to plan for succession, he's actively undermined his successors.

Part of me wonders if that's part of the mythology too. Maybe it wasn't just enough to be The Man Who Made Labour Electable, he also wanted to make it harder for other people to follow him, so that he could be the only Labour PM in town.

Because even now that the koolaid is wearing off and many are denouncing the cult

No they're not - they are simply replacing one cult (sic) figurehead with another - as I said on the other thread, the party, both its members and its machinery, remain inseparably wedded to the cult of personality.

Probably true actually for a lot of them, good point. Though I think it's hard to argue that Miliband was leading a cult of personality.

NW, I think that we could agree that the Soviet Union had a few other leaders who wouldn't qualify as cult (sic) figureheads - though perhaps you could argue that it was the eventual loss of the cult that lead to the whole edifice subsequently falling down, and it's recent revival that has been so popular... (In all seriousness, Khrushchev's denouncement of Stalin/cult of personality is a remarkable speech, and a fascinating insight into political psychology, well worth reading)
