Really good series on BBC2 at the moment about the history of hip hop.
Looks like the full series is on the iplayer too @ https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0dj70yd/fight-the-power-how-hip-hop-changed-the-world-series-1-1-the-foundation
Worth a watch
Hip Hop Evolution on Netflix is absolutely fantastic too
Just watched the first episode. Fascinating - I knew bits of the history but this series looks to be a bit more in depth.
Even Mrs Noise was interested and she's REALLY not into music culture, but as a History teacher who specialises in social history there was loads in there for her too.
It looks really good.
I think it was Tuesday this week that Nihal was talking about it with Chuck D on Five Live. Worth a listen as there’s an interview with Rick Rubin straight after it. Not a bad line up
This book is well worth a read too. It’s excellent.

Love it. Inspite of being an indie kid and lots of loving for Ibiza trance I have copious amounts of Hip hop in my playlists.
Grandmother Flash onwards.
Guess it depends on your age, but I've always felt (and the first episode backs this up for me) that hip-hop occupies the same place for a certain US demographic that punk does for the UK. Not just music, but politics, fashion, social conscience and longer term influence?
Proud me. My sister was pivotal in getting this series and the podcast made. 😊
Shocked at the social history / political football that was the Bronx, but yeah great program 👍
I was at the Afternoon club 'MFSB' on saturday afternoon / evening. It's excellent and the DJ's Yogi Haughton and Dave Elders play everything from Acid , funk , house ,soul and hip hop. Highlights towards the end were De La Soul 'Me myself and I' , King Bee ' Back by dope demand' and the jungle Bros. Then got home to find the History of Hip Hop on BBC2 .
'Quality' as the young yins say .
Will check this out.
Watched the first episode earlier and it is really interesting to now understand the political and social elements that forged the whole thing.
As a 14 year old in 84, all I was aware of was the music. Great memories of our square of Lino and ghetto blaster.
Not my kind of music, but the social aspects sounded really interesting on the trailer. I'll be adding it to my watch list.
