I find it hard to believe we haven't had a thread on this. So whose kids are spinning?

We have a healthy collection of chrome spinners, a ceramic bearing spinner, a forged spinner and several cheap frozen/hotwheels plastic type versions.

How come kids are so compelled by them?!

Our house now seems to be in post-fidget spinner mode.

I found a load of drums full of fidget spinners on the local waste ground - can't wait to get home to the angle grinder and open them!

You know the fad is over with da Kidz ... when you see them for sale in Waterstones in the middle of the city.

Limited to 1 each here - no point spending too much on a short-lived fad.

I remember spinners - the branded trick yoyos. Those were a much better fad toy.

Russell Spinners. I still have mine! (Sprite, cos every kid and their mother had Coke ones.)

EDIT - like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Classic-Russell-Spinner-Sprite-Professional-yo-yo-1980s-/292185244343

+1 but replace Waterstones with Debenhams for me. 🙂
I saw some very irritating 'toys' on market stalls in Croatia recently which I suspect someone is pushing as the next fad!!

My lad started on these a while ago, I even got him to make some out of Sugru when they were harder to get hold of. Taking bearings out of skateboard wheels.
Then I got suckered into buying him an expensive one.. then he got bored with them and I sold it on eBay - at a loss.. so the fad is fading. He still has a favourite one he keeps. It's titanium, so I approve.

We've had a few in our house... the worse the bearing (i.e looser, no grease) the 'better' the kidzz think they are.
Wouldn't last one spin in a typical british winter, I tell thee...

With five kids in the house we are tripping over the things. At least with loom bands there was an end product that kids could show off but fidget spinners just seem utterly pointless. I just can't see the attraction. 😐

That's them! I had a sprite one too, well up until it got confiscated by my maths teacher. I think that coincided with the fad dying out, so I don't think I claimed it back at the end of term. Mistake...!

Clue's in the name. Fidget. Do you doodle whilst on the phone? Click your pen top (like a bloke in this office does)? there is no point to fidgeting, but people do it.
I love the attempts to get spinning tops to join the fad.
https://www.gyroscope.com/d.asp?product=SHINNYFLIPTOP arf.

And! Right! People set up youtube channels and make themselves out to be "professional reviewers" of these things (the really do sound moronic). And! Right! My kid watches them! That's the bizarre bit.

Fidget Spinners. I'm not surprised in the slightest they've become a fad, and now over. Kids require stimulating and a healthy respect for chucking money at pointless toys.

(As mentioned ^^) What you really need to give your kids, to stimulate thier agile minds and physical dexterity and to inflict broken wrists and thumbs, are to re-introduce these Ball Clacker thingumybobs.
That'll keep em' quiet ... 😆

Russell Spinners

Original Duncan FTW!

Fidget spinners are the product of kids not being allowed to bite their nails or pick their nose - it's not like when I were a lady*.

Maybe.

*Was meant to be lad, but I'm going with it.

I don't.
I got a spinner free through a newspaper offer, possibly the best value object I own.
Possibly.

Fidget spinners have died the death in our household.

My lot are currently back to alternating between loom bands and hama beads. Both of which the cat seems to enjoy eating.

can you lot do any tricks?
I can balance on my nose, but that's easy. The one I need to accomplish still is the start it spinning in one hand throw to the other hand so that it lands and balances on one finger and continues spinning, now that is a trick to behold. You have to slightly drop the hand as it lands so that you can 'catch' the balance point. You have a go, it's not easy!

I looked for tricks, and as far as I can see it's getting it to spin in a particular location, such as nose. That's about it. We've got two, but they're usually down the back of the sofa so not really a craze here...

[s]fidget spinners[/s] Kid's fads just seem utterly pointless.
say some [s]old people[/s] adults.

I spotted some kids throwing twigs in to the water at a bridge, then running to watch them float out the other side, idiots.
I told them they were wasting thier childhood. 😛

They soon got banned at my school, thank goodness. This really sums up what the 2016-17 school session in Scotland brought is:

[img] [/img]

First it was bottle flipping, then 'dabbing' and then fidget spinners at my school. Wonder what 2017-18 will bring us!

Seemed to go out of fashion the moment I managed to find one for the lad.

I 'broke' it as well which didn't help. It's nothing more than a lump of metal with a cheap open bearing in the middle, a dry open bearing and it was making an annoying noise so I did what any self-respecting MTBer would do, I had the cover off, cleaned and greased it.

My Son owned the quietest, smoothest spinner in school, but sadly also the slowest and least spinny one. I was not popular.

Kids eh, no respect for a well-greased bearing.

They could at least make them out of cup'n'cone bearings so the kidz/yoof would learn some useful skills. Sorry i mean skillz.

I built one from an old wheel bearing and a chain cable tied to it. Opened the bearing and removed the grease, but occasional use of GT85 has kept it sweet. It doesn't get used as its smelly, but the kids show it to everyone who comes to the house. 😀

One of my daughters friends made some unkind comments about her fidget spinner being bigger and better than my daughters. She told me about it and I said we could make a giant one. I ended up buying some large 75mm bearings and cutting the shape out of some nice plywood. It ended up around 400mm and is lethal. Certainly shut her friend up when she took it to school.

The girlfriend's young cousin was showing of his fancy metal one last night. I guess it was fancy, it was abec-7 all round

Should've used light oil.

My daughter's one has a pretty decent bearing in it and spins for ages. So it's got me thinking how I could make one with heavy aero blades and a nice high quality bearing with the seals popped out.

I wondered if you could get them to fly given the right profile on the arm thingies?

Was an interesting conversation with the kids in class anyway.

I'd not seen one until recently, was impressed how well it spun. Made me wonder about putting full ceramic bearings in one.

If you're spinning plain bearings, try it with a compressor before letting go of the bearing.
