Have had fibre for a couple of years, and never had any complaints mostly normal surfing and iplayer usage.

However, some stuff has been buffering this week

Have run a couple of checks with speedtest.net and only getting 15-17mb on a 36mb contract.

I know speed varies on distance from the exchange, but is that classed as 'acceptable'?

Depends on what you would get on a normal ADSL line. Also, how did you test on wifi? Worth check the sync speed you are getting to the modem instead.

I'm on fibre and get 30 down and 9 up. On normal ADSL I was getting about 7 down and 1.5 up so a significant increase for me and well worth it.

Yes, test was on a WiFi connection.

Will try logging into the router over the weekend and check the sync speed

some suppliers take the mickey with the "up to" figure (as your 36mb contract will be "up to 36mb")

Vodafone at least have some sort of guarantee against this https://www.vodafone.co.uk/broadband/guaranteed-speed . How easy it is to claim, and whether other suppliers do something similar, I've no idea. The more people that have this sort of policy the better though

Ok, put your phone number into the first box in the link below:-
https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/
Look at the down stream and upstream results for "VDSL Range A (Clean)"
This will tell you the theortical max speeds your line will support.
Next
Go to
http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/
and run a speed test.
This should give you a clear indication of the ACTUAL speeds you are getting at that moment.
You should run this test with your computer connected via an ethernet cable and the wireless on the router turned off. Also, if you can disable any anti-virus and firewalls on your PC temporarily so as to avoid getting any innaccurate results. MAKE SURE YOU TURN THEM BACK ON AFTERWARDS!
Post the results up here if you want.
NB The results from the 2nd test will normally be a couple of Mbps lower than the results from the 1st checker.

If it used to be good and now it isn't, first thing I'd do is reboot the router.

Hi, just to update on this;

Have restarted router but no change - still getting 16-18mb (36mb contract)

DSL checker page

BT wholesale test carried out over ethernet while WIFI disabled on router;

BT Wholesale Broadband Performance TestBroadband Speed Test Results Download Speed (Mbps): 18.48Upload Speed (Mbps) : 3.59 Ping Latency (ms): 49

Ran further diagnostics;

Download speed achieved during the test was - 16.48 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 13.55 Mbps-19.35 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 19.35 Mbps

So it looks like 19.35mbps is maximum and any ticket I raise with the provider they will just look at the Acceptable Range of speeds and quote that back at me.

Sorry for not replying sooner.
I'd take that up with your provider, as the checker indicates you should be getting better than that. (35-54.9Mbps down). The IP Profile relates to the current profile setting that the connection is currently on and your speeds are in the ballpark for that. However, the profiles can be changed by the network, so it might be worth contacting them and asking if they can force the connection to be re-profiled.

Do you have powerline network adapters? They caused a similar problem with my connection.

Does UK still use exchanges when you're on fibre? Over here we have some copper if you have a FTTN connection but as far as I'm aware the old exchanges are not used as they were. I guess they have some equipment but distance shouldn't be a factor in a fibre connection for the most part.
