Fewer fireworks this year?

In previous years, several houses in my little enclave would have fireworks in their back garden. This year, not a single one. It was absolute bliss. Even looking round the sky in the distance there were noticeably fewer being set off.

Has the cost of living finally bitten and folk have realised they're literally burning money or have the shops limited sales?

The neds did try and bring some balance though by attacking the police

Quite a few impressive displays out my way, which is always nice. Never had any ourselves as my baby son's bedtime is at a bit of an awkward time - hopefully get some and a bonfire in the garden next year though!

Certainly had loads less on the build up. Fair amount last night though.

Not here unfortunately. As well asthe general background noise from 4pm onwards some tosser set off a series of very loud fireworks 3 gardens away at midnight. There is a park at the end of the street if anyone wants to set them off well away from houses. Both dogs were shaking wrecks.

We are going to a bothy at new year, partly to escape the fireworks.  Though last time we did this at a Torridon bothy the nearest  house 3 miles away set off fireworks at the bells.  But better 5 minutes at 3 miles distance than 8 hours down to 40 yards distance.

More here than ever. Lots of debris from them everywhere... including literally on our doorstep. I'm not complaining, don't mind them going off myself... but then I have no pets... and everywhere is sodden this year, so little chance of fires being started.

We went to an organised display this year.

It was at a cricket club, I was expecting 50 people, there were hundreds.

It was £6 each, there was a band, hot food, bar and awesome fireworks.

Maybe people ( like me) have decided organised display are safer and better.

Still loads round us and Aldi was sold out of fireworks.

Not here unfortunately.
Two or three households responsible for particularly objectionable behaviour on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for between 1.5 and 3 hours.
Some of the detonations would not have been out of place at a public display.
I've looked up the regs - categorisation is from 1 to 4 with the lowest covering sparklers and similar; cat 4 are for professional use only.
Cat 2 suggests/requires minimum distance of 8 mtrs from where fireworks are lit and cat 3 is 25 mtrs so...cat 2 suitable for most/all gardens and cat 3 for larger gardens.
Some people won't learn unless/until they or a family member is injured.

More than usual here too.

Mostly finished by about 10.30 though, so my early night wasn't ruined.

🙂

Rain stopped play locally, on Saturday, which was nice. Though a few tried to make up for it last night but not as many as normal.

I was wondering the same because we've had less here for sure.

Very peaceful here in Dunblane, not that it ever matched Sheffield and Liverpool's near war-zone feel. We had two houses that for the last decade have had big fireworks parties - but not a peep this year.

Much of muchness around here, probably less personal stuff, but more display stuff around, had someone firing off loud ones at 0130-0200 this morning, lots of complaining around the town for that one!

Reality is we'll get them going off for the rest of the week, then new year and so on, it rained here so a load of folk probably couldn't be arsed doing them.

Diwali is on 12th November this year so the CRA around my way have been letting off fireworks in volume since the weekend.  I expect they'll carry on for a week or so later.

Seemed less here, probably a mix of cost, bad weather and that the local estates near us really go for Halloween which seems to be much better value for young families than 5 to 10 minutes of setting of a few fireworks in your tiny new build garden. It also used to be that almost every pub around here would have something for bonfire night and their aren't many pubs anymore.

The headmaster of a school near us was killed setting off a firework at his schools display about 25 years ago 😕

There seemed to be a good number going off near my bit of Edinburgh last night, I was hearing bangs from 4pm until pushing midnight. It was quite alarming to hear about what had been going on in Niddrie when I saw the news this morning though.

None at all here - there were organised display at 2 other villages both yesterday and Saturday. Probably helps that you have to go to the mainland to buy fireworks - you can only get sparklers.

I miss the big bonfire. Something very very British about having a gigantic fire.

It must be memory from the time we used to burn the most annoying or useless person in the village.

Give it a few more years of regression progress and we can add it to the "Benefits of Brexit" thread 🙂

Seemed quieter round our village - weather hasn't helped. Also seemed to generally be quieter ones this year

pretty much constant from 7pm to 9, then a litle less, but still going off at 11.

made getting the dog out for a pee a bit of a guessing game.

hindsight, I shoud have put her in the van and drove out to the middle of nowhere to see the aurora.

I personally think they should move to organised displays only.

I think the issues with anti-social behavior out-weigh peoples "right" to have private displays and I say that as someone who has enjoyed a garden display in the past.

Nah, the wee bampots that were hurling fireworks at the emergency services last night; they should get 30 mins locked in a shipping container where fireworks gets set off through a letterbox sized hole.

I've got no doubt that in the near future firework sales will be banned and the only way you will access them is via a licensed display.  Then we will be able to bore our grandkids by saying that "back in our day you could buy rockets from Sainsburys and blow up your town."

<br />The fact that you can by explosives and set them off in your garden / street / local riot is nuts, the sooner they are banned the better.

How much anti-social behaviour is there though, in comparison to people having home displays?

Unless you mean the noise aspect, rather than eg the goings on in Edinburgh?

Plenty of quiet fireworks that are well worth enjoying, fountains, Catherine wheels etc. Even the rockets and candles don't have to be as noisy as they are made to be.

Probably varies based on where you are.  I grew up in a shitty town in the west of Scotland.  Bonfire Night was like "The Purge".  Where I am now is less of an issue but you still get the odd idiot setting of rockets at midnight.

I appreciate that the majority of people have sensible home displays but taking a purely utilitarian view I just can't see how the issues fireworks cause is balanced by the positives they provide.

Seemed quieter round by me this year and I didn't see any used fireworks littering the floor while out walking today

Its been a bit damp, may have persuaded people to find other entertainment. Also the 5th falling on a weekend seems to have restricted most people to either saturday or sunday. A midweek 5th seems to be the precursor to an entire weeks worth of pyrotechnics.

Diwali next weekend though, the past two years it has fallen before the 5th. So don't necessarily make "fewer fireworks" claims until that has been and gone.

I'm in Sheffield and it's been non-stop since the clocks went back. It dies down a little at midnight but there's basically popping and banging all night accompanied by barking dogs and crying babies.

Throw in all the cars which have been remapped to sound like machine gun fire and I'm going slightly mental.

round here its been getting less and less for years - I guess the gentrification in a high population density means less folk that go and let them off in the streets as no one has gardens.  Very few last night
