An opportunity to celebrate the weather and growing your own food, presuambly because we are no longer able to move to a different climate and because we cannot import or harvest enough fresh produce.

An opportunity to put some cash back into struggling arts and creative sectors or for the friends of the politicians to snaffle up yet more of the tax payers money.

I will not and cannot celebrate the stupidity of Brexit but I said the 2012 Olympics would be a disaster and that turned out ok.

Will you be getting behind the Festival?

The only way I'd get behind it is to help push it off a cliff.

If a celebration of British Weather is one of the headline acts then they must be really struggling

I wonder if they dare make it a national holiday. Lots of people will love the day off regardless of the label.

That way we can celebrate another great British victory like Dunkirk and the Charge of the Light Brigade.

Tbh I'll put aside my bias against Brexit and the Tories and see what's actually proposed before getting worked up about it.

If there's a bit of a holiday and some fun non-jingoistic activities that the kids will enjoy then why should I hate it?

Going in a huff because of Brexit and the current government would seem like putting my ego before what's best for me, my family and society.

Do we get a day off? I'll do owt for day off and a Spitfire flypast**. Of course a day off is by far the easiest way to get all the dingbats onside with their disposable bbqs and union jack wigs.

I think this one will be more Millenium Dome than 2012 Olympics

By the time we get to it I'm sure it'll be compulsory for us all to carry at least one Union Jack on your person at all times

I'll keep an open mind. It's a UK Festival, not a Brexit festival per-se and I've bitten off my nose a few times in my lifetime and regretted it.

If there's something on close, it looks like it might be fun or, at least something the kids might enjoy I might join in. If, as I suspect, it turns out to be some kind of god awful twee throw-back to a rose tinted version of Britain that never existed, then no, sod that.

Frankly, I hope they make it a national holiday, we lag behind our European mates on freebie days off, it's usually a great day to head off into the hills for a ride - see Royal Weddings for details.

Celebrate the loss of mine and others freedoms? Celebrate the regression of UK society?

In other news, The government is putting Turing on a £50 note. Whils still trying to deport gay asylum seekers back to countries where they face the death penalty for being gay.

It could all end up a bit 'Wicker Man'

Or a nationwide version of Banksy's Dismaland.

I know a few progressive Arts organisations are getting on board with this, either in the guise of making the best of things or simply as a by product of trying to source funding.

In the end it's the same as getting sponsorship from a Tobacco company, an oil company or a multinational bank I guess.

I think the moral thing for artists to do in this circumstance is to spend the money on coke and hookers (or equivalent), just take the money and run, that would embody the spirit of Brexit best.

Better still, I propose an art project where once the funds are received they are immediately deposited in an off shore tax haven. As a conceptual piece it would be both watertight and profound.

but I said the 2012 Olympics would be a disaster and that turned out ok.

There's a bit of an ongoing crisis resulting from the former olympic park and facilities, which are still costing a lot of money and will cost a lot of money to turn into something useful.

As others have said, a day off is a day off.

I have changed my mind. I think we should have BREXIT day but 51% of the time it should celebrate all the things that are great about Britain such as real ale and pork pies and then 49% of the time we celebrate all that is great about Europe such as freedom of travel, protected workers rights, food, inter-culturalism, consumer protection laws etc

It is. How do you think the money will be spent? It will be given to more cronies of ministers and Tory party donors.

In fact, it will the perfect metaphor for Brexit itself - in (comparative) microcosm. A pointless load of shit that will serve no purpose other than to line the pockets of the kleptocrats further whilst dazzling a bunch of ****wits who walk around goggling at anything with a plaggy union jack shabbily glued onto it.

Festival of Brexit?

Shove it up your poo pipe, Boris.

Definitely not keen here but when is it scheduled for?

Depending on the timing I wonder if it will just morph into a kind of "The Worst of Coronavirus is over" festival instead.

Either way, still not interested.

Last time I saw Bill Drummond he did some weird performance art thing which as far as I could tell was just shining people's shoes, really badly. I'm not sure a million flags are in budget, especially considering how high demand is in cabinet offices etc.

Revel in a crappy art installation and Legs Akimbo style theatre workshops in every major city, while consultants pocket the bulk of the money.

I’m not sure a million flags are in budget

Think more like Drummond… get a million people to bring a flag each, using adverts in the Daily Mail. Make a big display, lock the contributors in, and then blast the willing public with white noise while you burn all their flags. End it all with God Save The Queen played on kazoos.

NFW

but if I was there it'd also be with a EU flag
and any brexshit 50p coins modified to have the 12 stars on them

and if there's a day off, I'd explicitly do my best to adjust my shift pattern to work that day and take a different day off

My first thought was Banksy's Dismaland on steroids.
As a performer in the 2012 Opening Ceremony (hence my moniker) and seen the organisation that went into it - there's a travelling army of international producers that rock-up every couple of years to facilitate events - as we've given the big f-off to foreign workers, why on earth would they want to come here?
You'd also be seriously deluded to think that the creative industries that have been absolutely shafted by this Government are going to want anything to do with it. Mind you, the production team who did the 2012 TV series would make a great mockumentary.

I couldn't really give a shit about them gloating over their pyrrhic victory, they're the type of people who need to gloat to try to cover up their petty insecurities. That's why they voted Leave anyway.

Leave 'em to it. They'll end up looking like what they are. Thick, gullible tw*ts wasting their money queuing in the pissing rain for an unbelievably tacky and crap fake version of something from the real world. Let them eat cake. **** em.

a nationwide festival of creativity aimed at bringing the UK together in 2022.

Yeah? Could do with some of that couldn’t we? Creativity? Healing

The festival remains a divisive one. In some eyes it is a politically motivated “festival of Brexit”

Oh. Well done Guardian writer. Guarding against healing divisions. Even an unattributed “quote”, straight from the playbook of The Tabloid.

It's going to be a bunch of National Front morons and those people you get lining the streets at Royal Weddings conga-ing like blair and he queen on the millennium isn't it?

you'll go in under a Giant Colossus of Hoey, legs akimbo with some union flag bearskin wearing Nigel Faridge Queen's guards beside it.

I can image those £1 electric boat games where half the boats are the Geldof Armada and half Faridge.

It'll be absolute shite.

They should also hold it in somewhere like Jaywick in Essex to complete the post-apocalyptic feel, on the pretext that it will encourage some regeneration to the shittiest place in the UK. I'm the predominantly white, racist bigots living there will welcome more of their ilk.

It's intentional, sow division and use the artificially created 'enemy' to galvanise your core base against a common threat. It doesn't help that it seems to completely wrong foot Labour every time they do it.

I'm not really sure what Labour can really do to be honest. For sure they haven't really helped themselves the last few years but when your main opposition decides to push the nuclear button with regards race and nationalism it's a pretty difficult task.

The conservative party has dissolved into a sludge that is nothing more than the Brexit party. There was always a significant constituency of about half a million to a million people who voted NF or BNP, the Conservatives were always too moderate for them and the constituency was considered beyond the pale by most Tories.

Those racists have now been brought into the fold, they actually constitute the Conservative base now. Maybe were going to follow America, where things will have to get completely revolting before things begin to change. Things are going to get worse and more divisive for sure. In a way Labour have to let the Tories gorge themselves on this feast of nationalism until, like in Monty Pythons Meaning of Life they explode through gluttony. It will be messy and I fear it will be the police that will have to pick up the pieces, they are already being used as pawns by the government and by the end of the summer they are going to be exhausted by all the shit they'll have been dealing with.

It has been a masterful piece of political parasitism of a mainstream political party by extremists. It is extremely dangerous and the complacent ****s that just vote Tory because they still think it is 1976 are too blase to realise.

I have something to confess. My hatred for Brexit, for those who have facilitated it in any way, and for those who continue to rub our faces in it with their polarising lies and propaganda, knows no bounds.

If there is anyway I can display this publicly - especially in the face of this so-called 'Festival of Brexit' - shy of actually harming someone - I will happily do it.

Yup. The rebrand presumably is aimed at tying to “repair” the damage done to the union by Brexit. Million of our pounds being spent to try and make the “UK” look less like England kicking out at the rest of the world, and forgetting the needs of the other home nations.

Festival UK* 2022

Feels like Bill Drummond might have been involved after all.

What’s the ‘grow your own’about.

Digging up, taters, lettuce, carrots, onions, bits of old willow pattern china and ring pulls from cans of Cresta. Boil until cooked.

Then smashing the tethered and screaming family pig around the head in the back yard until it expires in a twitching mess of blood and brains.

Kids these days don’t know they were born.

I like the fact that STW can provide a place of therapy for little people to vent their inadequacy-fuelled anger.

See you at the next general election. Remember to bring your portable step so you can reach the desktop in the polling booth.
