Would a standard blood test pick up anything or do you need a specific test?

I've got a bite that still hasn't healed since my holiday 3 weeks ago. I think it was a Mosquito bite. However I felt wiped out before this.

Was talking about this with a doctor friend recently. Known as TAT or TATT, tired all the time. Very common and very hard to diagnose. Could be a massive range of things.

Apparently lots of Tiger mosquitoes in that area at the time if that helps?!

Not really. Fever? Rash?

Mossie bites can take a few weeks to heal up, especially if they get slightly infected. Not sure what the GP would do in the absence of other symptoms. Any tick bites this summer?

What area? Country specific would help. From the top of my head Malaria, Dengue or Zika...

Your wound healing speed decreases with age so a slow healing mozzy bite isn't necessarily a sign of anything bad.

Is it infected at all?

Rather than asking the Doctor to test you for 'X' why not make use of their training and experience and just describe your symptoms, let them examine you and then agree a course of actions based on that?

Yeah, but then we'd have to, you know, listen and think and such..

It's much easier if you say "google told me X" or "STW suggested Y".

It also lowers our insurance premiums if we consult mumsnet/STW at least weekly, to see what's popular..

and a re read of I have had symptoms then got bitten so the bite is a red herring, got to be cat aids though probably the good kind other wise you would have gone by now....

Why do that when the internet can fix you

Does it sometimes feel like you are HY ?
Any POCH marks around the bite ?
Having problems switching ON in the mornings ?
Skin feel DRI ?
Do you AChe ?

If you have all these symptoms, sometimes the answer can be found when you look at them all together.
Or go here Top Internet analysis

If you work with this as a given, and then look for reasons why he DOESN'T have Cat AIDS, you can't go far wrong..

DrP

In all seriousness, Wwaswas's suggestion seems the most acceptable..see a professional, tell a story, answer some questions, bend over, blood tests, take it from there...

Was it a family holiday or a drug fuelled week of debauchery in Thailand

Sounds like the first stages of HIV the bite might just be a coincidence

@ DrP

Serious question; if i have something up i google the symptoms before going to see the doctor. i don't stride in suggesting I have whatever the answer was, but if on examination and questioning he doesn't have any firm idea what it is, then I'll probably ask whether it could be. Is this likely to have me listed as an internet expert, to be humoured and then dismissed or is this reasonable behaviour.

Got me a proper whooping cough diagnosis after nearly 3 weeks of being told it was just a bronchial cough exacerbated by asthma and cold weather.

And i recently asked whether I could potentially get a thyroid test based on a series of symptoms - which he agreed to and also asked for some others at the same time.

[serious mode]
theotherjonv - it's actually really important for a doctor (not just GP) to involve the patient in the consult (!).
Yes, they will ask lots of questions about symptoms etc etc, but what's also really important is to understand the patient's Ideas, concerns, and expectations (ICE (ICE Baby))
Essentially, it will be a crap consultation if you (the Dr) don't elicit this.

Mostly the ICE are reasonable..
"I've got pain in my chest doc"
"hmm, have you thought about what it is"
"I fink it's me 'art doc"
"hmm, yes, probably" etc etc

But unless these ICE conmponents are extracted from teh patient, the consultation will be felt to be useless by the patient, and they are likely to present again.

Sometimes the ICE is crazy. HOWEVER...... unless you address the crazy in front of you, it's bound to come back again (because it won't feel listened to).

So, i always ask and expect patients to have done some research/seen eastenders/read the mail. It's how the Dr deals with it (congratulating you on a correct data search, or calmly steering you away from a bonkers-conkers idea) that often makes patients like or dislike their Dr.

GPs are MUCH better trained in this aspect (consultation skillzzz) hence why they are felt to be more 'touchy feely'. However, hospital doctors would do really well to employ some primary care consultation skills in secondary care, TBH.
It would result on a tonne less investigations the patient never really wanted.
(Expectation component - "what do you want?".."I just want to know what's going on, i don;t want treatment etc")

[/serious mode]

DrP - are you available for training other GPs? Your approach sounds really good, it isn't patronising and you're in detective mode. Is impressed. 🙂

See GP and tell him which countries you visited. Get blood test. My mum picked up a tropical discease without ever leaving UK, assumption was it came from an insecr bite from something in imported fruit & veg

You want to be sure it's not Dengue as you don't want to get that twice

I went to my GP earlier this year with a similar issue. I was given a standard blood test which regardless was interesting and useful for a whole range of health indicators.

Upshot of it was that I wasn't getting enough sleep and the GP was quite stern when emphasising it's importance.

Good luck.

How much alcohol do you drink a week?
How much exercise do you get a week?
How much sleep do you get each week?
How many hours do you work each week?

Its usually some combination of too much or two little of these things that leave you feeling tired

Best make sure you're at least getting the minimum required and possibly an extra 50% for good measure......

Oh, man - thought I had that a year or two ago. Left me feeling wiped out all the time. Sadly for me, turned out on googling to be something much more serious.

Anyone want my bike ?

Normally I would but I'd be afraid that hypochondria might be spread by contaminated grips and saddles. If it its I fear Hora could be Patient Zero - just imagine how many people he might have infected.

I don't think there's any way of holding you delicately in this particular instance. Unless Lancashire politesse has slipped even further than I thought.

Bloody ell Project!

I had a test to donate platelets. I was deemed too low but healthy bloods at the time (last year). I broached the subject on Lyme Disease and was told no point blank that you'd see the Tick as it's always on you until you remove it..

WRT Lyme disease and seeing the tick... it is pretty easy to scratch a tick off without realising it was even there, leaving its mouth parts and all the poison rubbish inside you.
