It's been a tough few days. I remain thankful for my survival and for everything everyone did - and keeps doing - for me, but the last three days have been a real challenge.

I have been sleeping poorly, and long for a simple good night's sleep. I have managed to trim as much of my beard as I can reach, but both my beard and hair have become scruffy, and on top of the fact that I have inevitably put on weight during my convalescence, I feel like my appearance has gone to pot. Even though in one of my capacities, I should have some trustworthy friends in whom I can confide and from whom I can ask advice, it feels like this is not the case right now. On another front, I have someone blaming me for a failure I don't believe I am to blame for, and of course, being the internet age, this is quite public. I can't really read, because I need varifocals, but only have glasses for distance, and the neck brace means that I can't quite tilt my head or hold the book at the right distance. Mrs SR drove me to a hospital appointment today, and the traffic seemed awful. And finally, I feel like I'm walking around with permanent vertigo.

I know there are many, many out there who are actually suffering, and that I really don't have much to complain about. I just feel shitty, really down, and not very optimistic at the moment.

Sorry. Just needed to spill.

If you can scratch your bollocks it's ok.

If you can't, then that means someone else will do it for you. Even better.

HTH

PS I do understand. Every sympathy. Good to let it all out early.

PPS All things pass, and you'll look back at this. Right now, just breathe deeply. And scratch 😉

Audiobooks? you could sign up for the audiobook Kindle service. Or some kind of holder to allow you to read Or maybe put your glasses on upside down? Something can be figured out I'm sure.

You have us to rely on. Spend more time on STW talking about bikes. Or ranting about Brexit. It's good for you.

If you're around tomorrow I'll come over if you like, help you solve the book problem? 🙂

As for the weight - I went to America recently so I'm sure you're still lighter than me.

I would have thought a perfectly natural reaction to the situation you find yourself in. ~"this too will pass"

On a practical level - how about a book stand / holder - might help.

Reflect on your fears when you were being taken to hospital - now reflect on how far away from them you are now just a few weeks later.

I dont recommend the reading of the STW Brexit rant ... there is clear evidence that has resulted in serious cognitive impairment to those regularly ranting on there!

Have you considered shaving off the beard? the STW DE Razor threads are particularly interesting though (in comparision to the Brexit one anyways). And you can use your time convalescing searching for a bottom dial fatboy instead.

Thanks, folks.

@molgrips: You’ll be more than welcome tomorrow. We can talk history, or physics, or the history of physics. Anything to distract me from myself will be much appreciated!

My daughter and I play the history game at bedtime where she gives me a year and I tell her something that happened in that year. Last night it was 1990 (FFS) and tonight it was 1919. I drew a blank on that one.

Welcome to my world. 🙂

Enjoy it whilst it lasts.

I've been feeling so bad it's unbelievable - then I found out today that a 19 year old family friend called the police at the last minute from a motorway bridge early on Monday morning.

We're all still here, supporting each other.

Love, light and peace,
Pete.

Btw, have you read the Shardlake books by CJ Sansom?

Bit of historical light relief whilst you're on the mend.

And don't let guilt be your master - you sound like a fine father, husband and genuinely decent all round bloke to me.

Oh and 1919:
Boston molasses flood, Alcock & Brown, Bauhaus and my dad's third birthday. 🙂

Been there, and know what it's like. I was stuck in hospital for 6 1/2 weeks after I broke my back - I smelt like hospital when I came out, hair was a mess. Once out, it was much as you describe. I'd suggest box sets. I had a full body brace on as well. It takes time, so hang in there.

@SaxonRider - unkempt is a default state once you hit 40. Neck, ear, back and nostril hair conspire against you until the end of days

Embrace it, don't resist it.

1919 - Ministry of Health created!

The first body which could be called a department of government was the Ministry of Health, created through the Ministry of Health Act 1919, consolidating under a single authority the medical and public health functions of central government. The co-ordination of local medical services was expanded in connection with emergency and wartime services, from 1935 to 1945, and these developments culminated in the establishment of the NHS in 1948.

- Wikipedia

Also the firs Minister of Health, Christopher Addison is appointed in June of that year. Again from Wikipedia:

Addison became President of the Local Government Board in January 1919, with the goal of transforming it into a Ministry of Health. He became the first Minister of Health in June. He was responsible for a great deal of social legislation, including the first Housing and Town Planning Act, under which the state built low-rent homes (council houses) for the working-class.

I managed to et myself on fire with R/C nitro fuel . Had a gauze on my face so I looked like a rolled Gammon joint . Couldn't shave for weeks or shower / wash properly. I know exactly how you feel, grimey like you have been away camping for a long weekend and the showers were cold.

Wet wipes / baby wipes ftw i reckon.

I found that short walks really helped. Just being mobile and outside staggering around a park. I was in no fit state to read and don’t watch TV. I did some coding for work as a distraction. Typing with only my left hand was a new world of frustration.

You won’t gain a lot of weight and you won’t lose a lot of fitness. Three months after my accident I did Ride London in 4:06. But it felt awful at the time.

I set milestones for getting back. Sitting on a turbo trainer came at 12 weeks.
