I lived in Paris for two and a half years. Mine is ‘flan’ - an inch thick slab of vanilla goodness:

I saw the custard thread and was disappointed by its content. This makes up for it. Thank you.
Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream, Probably the only ice cream I really like.
Looks like a good reason to visit Blackpool! 🙂
Pastel de nata: a nice sneaky treat (especially when your local supermarket sells them).
There are too many to choose a favourite
What is it about milk/cream that goes so well with vanilla?

Eurgh.. Makies ice cream, no vanilla required.
You stick to your Makies and i'll stick with what I like.
You can't compare makies to hd. One is the top rung its class (makies) the other the bottomish (hd). Both are great but separate categories really.
Pastel de nata
Not as good as a well made British style custard tart, or even a Spanish one. And I've had the ones from 'the' place in Belem too.

Not 'as' good no, much better. Uk egg custard meh. Pastal de nata 🤤
I’m also quite partial to a Manchester tart - Walkers bakery in Skipton does a nice one (but they often sell out quite quickly).
It's hard to pick a favourite. There are so many tasty options. I'm struggling to think of a bad one. Creme brulé, pastel de nata, creme Catalan, custard slice, custard doughnut, custard tart, creme caramel, even the humble custard cream. Yum
Just homemade custard. Egg yolks, cream, milk, sugar, a tiny amount of flour and vanilla.
Crème caramel. Or the OP’s tarte. In fact anything with custard to be honest. Including trifle.
I'd struggle to choose between an English egg custard and pasta del nata.
I may need to visit a local supermarket and do some extensive research.
Curd cake unless you're outside N. Yorkshire when a custard slice hits the spot.
I LOVE custard. 😍
That flan looks amazing.
Best thread ever.
I've not given this important subject enough though previously.
I'll have to go with anything custard related
Well I read this before heading to Tesco. Custard slices for lunch was a result. Thanks for reminding me of the need of them OP 👍
Pastal de nata 🤤
We actually have this place near us, and they do a full-size tart filled with pastel de nata custard:

Om, and indeed, nom nom.
Fisher and Donaldson fudge doughnut
Egg custard tart bucket from the bakery in Disley.
My mother's custard was famous.
Bird's custard made with soya milk. You had to slice it 😂
I love anything custardy (with, ahem, certain exceptions).
My vote goes to Vla, a Dutch custard pudding type thing that my wife makes sometimes. Could eat buckets of the stuff.
That large pastel de data is awesome. It does say "This whole cake serves 6 to 10 people" which I think is optimistic. It's probably a good job I don't live near Cardiff. 😋
@northernsoul neither do I, funnily enough - they have a branch in Bath (where I live) and despite what their website says, they are easily procurable! As you say, '6 - 10 people' is wildly optimistic, though they are massive. I reckon given a day of shame I could probably put one away...
I love custard in all its magical forms. However I did once fall (briefly) out of love with it after consuming an entire family sized Flan from a beautiful French patisserie just before riding up Mt Ventoux in the middle of summer. What was I thinking? I ruined a nice climb, a nice flan and my digestive tract in one Flan-induced moment of madness.
No losers in this thread. But if I had to choose, creme brulee. Proper vanilla custard with a crunchy caramel top: perfect.
