Not in a gastro pub, but your default food order in a proper boozer when you're Hank Marvin and cant be arsed looking at the menu. Non pretentious pub grub. For years I would have said steak and ale pie and chips, but I have recently rediscovered the underated delights of ham, egg, chips and peas.
Partial to scampi, chips and peas with tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon.
Mixed grill.
A decent ploughmans. Hard to find though.
Malet burger and a few pints of Hop Back or Stonehenge.
Ham, egg & chips cant be beaten
Sausages, mash, onion gravy, peas.

Sausages, mash, onion gravy, peas.
Good call. Have to be good local butchers sausages though. Or in the lake district, a massive swirl of Cumberland sausage.
Stovies
Or haggis neeps and tatties
Steak & Ale Pie still does it for me ..but I'm also quite partial to Lasagne & chips
Gammon / ham, egg and chips, or steak and kidney pie. Sausages can either be lovely or awful so tend to avoid in pubs when you don't know the provenance.

The good ones do tend to veer into gastro pub territory.
Scampi and chips, in a basket of course !!
Whatever I like the look of as It goes past.
Guinness and good quality pork scratchings .
steak and kidney pudding and mash. nom
edit: just read the bit about "without looking at the menu", doh.
There hasn't been one thing posted yet that I wouldn't happily scoff. Even the pork scratchings, though obviously that's a starter, or a side dish not a meal!
scampi, chips and peas with tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon.
This is what I choose if I'm in Pub that I don't know/have been to before/can't be bothered looking at the menu..
It's been a while since I've had Scampi, all I can remember of it is being soggy mulch contained within a brittle bullet.

Ham, egg and chips or gammon, egg and pineapple with chips. Do not like choosing between pineapple or egg have to have both.
Macaroni cheese, chips, garlic bread.
Triplecarbtastic!
Sunday roast (veggie version).
mixed grill. or the biggest steak.
Chain pub/not food oriented
Rump steak and chips
Fish and chips
Normal pub menu but nicer pub
Burger and chips if it comes with onion rings, bacon and cheese or
Pie
Chicken in a basket.
Exactly what I was thinking drac. De riguer in many establishments in the 60s and 70s. Along with chicken kiev.
Still, I reckon gammon egg and chips is a good standby, or a full mixed grill.
Faggots with chips peas and gravy or Chicken Kievs chips and beans
Ham, egg and chips for me. If I could have a pint of Summer Lightning at the same time I’d be very happy.
Unfortunately my local does the beer but not food, wouldn’t want them to either as it’s not a food sort of pub and would ruin it.
Used to to a pub called The Robin Hood and Little John where requests for food got the reply
"There's a cafe at the end of the road"
Not strictly a 'meal' but I still sometimes travel to an old local which does a meal-sized 1/2 French stick filled with cheese and Spanish onion. With either chips or Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps* and a pint of Batham's Bitter. Old-school heaven.
*Before Walkers wrecked the recipe by adding sugar.
If there is Stovies on the go I'm yer man.
Failing that steak pie.
Pasta bake.

Yup proper old school.
Ooooooo memories.
Our local used to do a good hot chilli served in an eight inch diameter Yorkshire pudding with golden chips. It was bloody brilliant.
And you can't beat a hot roast beef in onion gravy baguette, with chips.
Bleedin starvin now!
Ham, egg and chips for me. If I could have a pint of Goodens Gold at the same time I’d be very happy.
My local does brew the beer but not cook food. It seemed to cause a lot of angst with the flotsam that wafted in expecting GastroPubMultch ..... Whilst I miss H/E&C’s but as it’s not a food sort of pub it would totally ruin it.
FIFM
Sausage, mash and gravy. Mash now comes creamed or crushed ffs!
Tuna melt. Baguette filled with tuna, melted cheddar and red onion.
Proper fit.
Got to be gammon, egg and chips. I got 2 mahoosive gammon steaks from the
butchers yesterday to cook that very meal this evening 😃
Also steak and ale pie. Can we just take a moment to pay homage to the ultimate example of this... the cow pie at the George Hotel in Keswick, where i will be going for my birthday tea next Saturday...

Aye gammon, egg and chips is quite special. One of local butchers does amazing gammon steaks.
Proper boozers don't do food. 20 packs of crisps please barman.
But that pie binners posted looks worthy of a dedicated visit. Oh my.
We used to have a country pub nearby that used to make pork scratchings - you could either have it salted or not with a big bowl of apple sauce - lovely! Dogs loved it too.
Binners, that Cow pie for your birthday, you gonna have half or whole!?
I've only ever managed half washed down with a few Snecks.😁
Scampi n chips in a basket.
Has to be steak and ale for me
Scampi and chips with a pint of something hand pulled. I've had a craving for it for weeks now...
Muddylegs- despite making sure I go out for a massive all day walk or ride, to work up an appetite, I can still only do a half portion - which is still absolutely enormous!
How anyone does a full one is beyond me. You’re into proper man versus food territory!
Burger and chips for the easy quick choice. Got to be a brioche bun though.
