"I love her so much it hurts me", by David & Ruben.
Not sure if it is technically northern soul but
Sorry for breaking the rules early doors!
Northern Soul sample?
Back on track with a classic
This is going to be one of those music threads where you listen to every song...
The magic touch-melba moore
If I could only be sure-Nolan porter

Picture me gone
tobi legend
funny how we're all different
Everything about NS makes me feel nauseous.
But please, carry on.
Is drlex in my band? His first two selections were going to be my two (part of our playlist), so I guess I'll have to pick the 3rd one we play:
(we have lots of other funk and soul, but I think those are the only ones which are really Northern Soul - the rest is too mainstream!)
The Snake is definitely my favourite though (to play - I play trumpet, though it's blinking hard to play that trumpet part well)
The new wave of Northern soul
Errr no..
The Snake is definitely my favourite though
Sadly the video linked doesn’t have the stereo separation of the drum intro.
@aracer - my experience and enjoyment stems entirely from Craig Charles’ and Stuart Maconie’s infectious enthusiasm.
Terry Callier - Ordinary Joe
More of an end of the night filtering out into the cold morning air type of tune rather than a big floor filling stomper but it is just lovely
Frankie Beverly & The Butlers
I would of included Frank Wilson's Do I love you but drlex beat me to it.
It's cheesy, but awesome 🙂
I'll second Frankie Valli!
A bit cheesey yes but a classic!
There's always been something about this one
Just an observation - I don't really understand the concept of 'Northern Soul''. We were listening and dancing to most of those songs in Lancashire in the
Late 60s / early 70s when it was just plain old soul. For the record, Jerry Butler, 'Only the strong survive' FTW.
Flirtations: Nothing But A Heartache
Some cracking floor fillers so far,
So here's my contribution
Not a clue why, no special meaning but I just love it
All my usual favourites have been mentioned so here is my current favourite. It's even made this century!
Ps dancing girl is gorgeous.
[quote=failedengineer ]Just an observation - I don't really understand the concept of 'Northern Soul''.
My understanding is that it's supposed to be non mainstream in a inverse snobbery sort of way (absolutely no offence intended - I like Northern Soul), though given some of the tracks suggested are fairly mainstream, then I don't really know - I guess it's Northern Soul because it's Northern Soul.

The Snake is indeed the best. Closely followed by
It's worth reading Stuart Maconi's Cider with Roadies about the Wigan northern soul scene, and him not quite believing his luck at living in Wigan as he hit adulthood as the Northern Soul scene hit its stride. The centre of the musical universe.
I feel the same about hitting adulthood in1988 in Manchester 🙂
I bloody love Northern Soul! There's some belters on here! If I'm jealous of any older generation it's that I never got to go to Wigan Casino
I was too young to go to Wigan Casino but I have to listen to Kevin telling me about how good it was. Travelling over from Barnsley most weekends and how on its first anniversary he had to get a tow back with a washing line fastened around his Lambretta crash bars with a Vauxhall Viva.
Awesome thread!
For fans of The Snake, a version with the proper stereo drum intro:
Been trawling down my favourites list :
