MrsSB and I went away to Lancashire a few weeks ago and I had grilled kippers for breakfast which were amazing.

Fast forward to this week and she was out for the evening so I had the opportunity to make another of my favourite ever meals... Kegeree.

Just realised that, other than my other favourite - sausages, I seem to have a thing about having fish for breakfast!

What's top of your brekky list given the time and choice?

Think we did this not too long ago, but...

Tinned mackerel in spicy tomato sauce (Princes - not as keen on other brands) on toasted Warburtons seeded batch. Black pepper and Hendo's or Lea & Perrins.

If I don't have the spicy (just tomato sauce) version, then maybe a splash of Tabasco

If I'm in a hotel and there is a buffet breakfast, then the answer is 'the lot'

Brunch wise I do like eggs Benedict.

Watching my son play football on Saturday morning then a bacon roll and a sweet cup of tea goes down best.

Often at the weekend I'll make pancakes for breakfast, the kids love it.

I'm partial to a croissant with apricot jam.

But the correct answer is buttered toasted crumpets.

Smoked salmon or gravlax and scrambled eggs on toasted grainy bread with porage, a nice fruit and veg smoothie and tea.

Since ive been here in southern Germany im really enjoying a Fleischkäse in a Linzgau Brötchen - essentially a steaming hot slice of meat grilled on the edges in a freshly baked bread bun similar to sour dough with some sweet mustard. Hits like a bacon sandwich with brown but keeps you full all day.  Apologies to all vegetarians/vegans out there.

Shakshuka. Roll and square sausage. Spicy mushrooms on sourdough. Big bowl of porridge with banana and golden syrup....
List is endless, breakfast is the best feed of the day!

If I'm staying somewhere nice and kedgeree is on the menu, then I'm having that - no debate.

But it rarely is, so I'm more likely to order an avocado and poached eggs on sourdough type of thing, probably with middle eastern flavours.

At home, my current quick and tasty go-to brekkie is scrambled eggs with pastrami instead of smoked salmon - on nice toast. Give it a try.

Tinned mackerel in spicy tomato sauce (Princes – not as keen on other brands)

Have you tried the Lidl one? I really like it.

Jamon Iberico on toasted pan rustico drizzled with olive oil and a bit of mushed up tomato. Together with a double espresso and followed by churros and chocolate.

Best served at Cafe Azul in Tarifa, setting me up for a day's windsurfing.

What’s top of your brekky list

Full English.  I’m not even that fussy about what exact combo I get

given the time and choice?

Time?  I’m not cooking it, cafe only

If I’m in a hotel and there is a buffet breakfast, then the answer is ‘the lot’

This... I'd love a full English more often, but there's no way I'm cooking it myself 🙂

Usual breakfasts are overnight oats (yoghourt, apple juice, frozen red fruit and oats; left overnight in the fridge) or something like guacamole with scrambled eggs on toast. Beans on toast also an option.

Jordans Super Nutty with Yeo Valley Honey Greek Style Yoghurt - I say favourite as it's really sorted out my stomach and digestive system.

A small bowl of roasted jumbo oats, chopped banana, whatever other fruit is to hand (raspberries, blueberries, sultanas (soaked overnight obvs), dates, etc) covered in Greek-style yoghurt, assorted nuts and seeds, and a small squeeze of honey. Sometimes chia seeds if you want to spend the rest of the day with a toothpick. Mix thoroughly and shovel in. Breakfast of the Gods.

Takes 60s to make and knocks breakfast cereals into a cocked hat. Keeps you going until dinner.

Boxing day as a kid, my breakfast was leftover trifle, happy times (my mom made me trifle for Christmas as I was an awkward bugger who didn't like dried fruit).

Last night's leftover Lamb Tikka Dopiaza.

Failing that, Cumberland sausages, eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms.

Failing that...porridge with berries added.

22+ years ago, it used to be 2 Regal King size and a very large mug of tea with 3 sugars in. Glad I saw sense in the end (laughing emoji)

Kegeree is a dinner time meal for me.

Give me a buffet or a cooked breakfast at a nice hotel - The Pig do a great one, Oku in Ibiza's breakfast was also fantastic.  Nice fresh fruit, pastries, good sausages and bacon, sourdough, homemade jams mmmmmm.

Big fan of a simple pair of soft boiled eggs peeled and popped into the gobhole intact (one at a time) - squooshy yolk FTW. 🙂

Other than that, can't beat big fat slices of bacon between slices of fresh white bread. 🙂

Scrambled egg on toast if I'm making it myself. Sausage and egg sarnie if I've got a reason to pack extra calories in that day.

When I'm out for breakfast, I like a full english, but also love a yank breakfast, pancakes, waffles or french toast, with eggs hash browns and them funny little sausages, bacon like fine china and unlimited filter coffee.

Don't really like fish, other than chippy fish, maybe because I'm from the midlands.

Smoked salmon and scrambled egg on a toasted muffin. I cut the smoked salmon up and cook it with the scrambled egg so it’s lightly poached. Bloody delicious!

We do have a full English every Sunday morning on the general principle that it’s rude not too 😀

Fish for breakfast is a no no for me.  Usual is a nutty granola with full fat milk - the latter a determined indulgence in a world of sensible eating.  When on holiday and it’s available, I am partial to Eggs Benedict

Is that the shabby hut in the Old Town? We used to holiday in Whitby when we were kids and always brought them back and the house would stink of them – and it got worse when microwaves were invented and my dad insisted on cooking them in the damn thing!

Guilty pleasure in our household.

A decent full cooked for me: sausage, bacon, black pudding, haggis, hash browns, tattie scone, grilled tomato, beans.

Some cracking meals in here, I'm going to throw a random on in:

Old school Bacon & Beans boil in the bag, superseded by the less excellent all day breakfast.

The beans had an irradiated glow and the bacon was salty as hell which made it mandatory to wash it down with a mug of hot tea.

Bloody delicious.

Yep, that's the one - Henrietta Street I think, just down from the Abbey.  You can often see them hanging in the smokehouse.

They are very nice but the smell after cooking can linger for days!

Partial to a full English as a treat (but only if it isn't junk meat).

The king of normal, non heart attack inducing and messy clearing up breakfasts has to be porridge made with oat milk (dairy and me have agreed to disagree) and any one of a number of different toppings.

I’ve always liked French Toast for breakfast. When I lived in Thailand they used to serve it with honey, and I was converted to this quickly.
Then, one day I saw a German tourist order it with bacon. I couldn’t believe I’d never thought of this myself!

So, French toast, bacon , honey. With tea. And an espresso afterwards.

I like a proper brunch and cook one often. Sausage, bacon, poached eggs, grilled tomatoes, grilled pepper, avocado on sourdough toast, a few beans (for Mrs TiRed), mushrooms with cherry tomatoes, washed down with juice and a nice coffee. I normally have a cereal to start and fruit to finish.

Christ almighty, what kind of deviant puts avocado on the same plate as baked beans? Genuinely disturbing.

Weekend breakfast: RadMac on 6Music; Proper toast, avocado, olive tapenade*, perfectly poached egg, Aleppo pepper flakes; Decent coffee; Guardian/Observer with time to read it.

Hungover weekend breakfast: F-all on the radio (if it's that bad I want to watch a re-run of Celtic scudding Rangers); at least two Mortons crispy morning rolls containing toasted potato scone, fried mushrooms, fried egg, Sriracha and lots of it, vegetarian haggis if available (requires pre-planning so unlikely); Decent coffee; Guardian/Observer with time to read it; Minimal conversation.

* - the olive tapenade addition came from Guy Garvey who revealed Rachael Stirling likes it. I just want to be prepared. It is an excellent addition though.

Pane con tomate. Grated tomato on (sourdough) toast. Have it virtually every day ever since I got a taste for it visiting the folks in Spain .

Works better on a toasted baguette, but fancy sourdough is easier to find than good baguette.

Asking for a friend

What about hangover breakfasts? Surely there can be only one? Washed down with a pint of full fat Coke?

More seriously…

Eggs Benedict is a favourite. I would say a full English, but I only REALLY like about half the traditional ingredients, and hash browns. Love kedgeree too, but it’s more of an evening meal for me.

only just started eating breakfast regularly during the week (work provide it for free) so I normally have Greek yoghurt, fresh assorted berries, and granola. Makes me feel healthy, even if it isn’t.

Smokey bacon and tin (boiled) tomatoes.

Couple pieces of toast to absorb juice, slice of fried bread to soak up the bacon fat/juice  (kept out of tomato juice) ... good sprinkle of black pepper.

Weekend breakfast: RadMac on 6Music;

ahhhh a man of good taste.

 perfectly poached egg,

ok, i realise this is probably a whole new thread, but how do you 'perfectly poach' yours?  i thought id found it after all these years when i did them one by one for around 4 mins each in swirling water, then plopped them into a pan of cold water.   then when all 3 were in there, put them back into hot water for another minute or so.  started off well, but then the last few have been cr@p and went to usual stringy, flat shape with the residual swirling water.  probably cos theyre not fresh, dunno, but i want to discover nirvana.  perfect 'quenelle' shaped poached eggs.  im not there yet.

you dont get snot on the top and egg white stuck to the cups even if theyve been 'buttered up'?

That's the badger - that looks posh, we bought a cheap one from Wilko's for, like, a fiver. 🙂 No snot on top, just a drop of olive dropped in and smeared around the tub (including the rim) and nothing gets stuck, you can just shake 'em out. 🙂

Have inherited my Grandfather Roy's love of a proper full English, my Nan used to cook him one pretty much every day for 40 odd years.

He died at age 68, a year or so after a triple heart bypass.

As a family we still wonder if this was true love or the slowest murder in British culinary history.

Our house rules dictate that I'm only allowed to do a fry up when we have guests staying over, I do take full advantage though.

For two poached eggs, I use the egg cooker. For four, I drop the poacher into a large pan. Henry likes to try and remove any stuck egg from the cups. And gets an egg of his own too.

4:30? Crikey! Didn't think they were on a low heat - but maybe we do! 🙂 Eggs in the pan, boil the kettle, add  boiling water and fire up the gas, put the lid on and start the clock, go full-gas until we have a gentle boil. 🙂

Eggs Stornoway from Cafe Tioram in Acharacle. A cheese scone cut in half with a slice of Stornoway black pudding on each half. On top of each black pudding goes a poached egg with hollandaise sauce. A truly beautiful breakfast.
