Does the iPhone keyboard support swiping rather than tapping? I always have had better results with swiping on my Android phone, particularly after it learns my style for a bit.

it's not really a "fat thumb" issue, it's a hand-eye-co-ordination issue... doesn't matter how big whatever the thing is you use to press the keys, it always clicks on whatever the centre point is... 🤷‍♂️

turning the phone on its side makes the target a bit bigger. iPhone Max also has bigger buttons obviously! Otherwise as above, speech recognition works great.

Not very useful when i'm trying to send text messages.

can it voice-to-text ?

I think so, but i'm rarely in places that's appropriate.

Fingertips and a very well trained spellchecker has worked for me for as long as I’ve used an iPhone - since the 3G.

I can’t and have never used my thumbs, partly because I’ve never had the dexterity, and now because arthritis makes it too painful.

Most of the stuff I’ve just written has been using the spellchecker.

But then, I’ve been using it for a long time! 😁

Is SwiftKey available on iPhone? Works better for me than the stock android keyboard, and suggests the word you're trying to to type based on your typical language use.

😀 My old work iphone (XR) was terrible for this, even with swiping. Random misspelled words, odd spacings and punctuation. I don't even have particularly fat thumbs.

My new Android (Galaxy A52 Enterprise) and my own phone (S22U) have no issues at all, either with the stock keyboard or the one i have installed (GBoard). Make of that what you will!

I use SwiftKey on an iPhone. My thumbs are still not fully recalibrated from my last (Android) phone though, and I've had this one for at least two years!

Coming from SwiftKey on Android to the stock iPhone keyboard was painful - like going back in time, so I installed SwiftKey immediately. It's actually not quite as good on iPhone as on Android, some options not available, no idea why.

Yes. Before I started this thread I had  just got it and am finding it underwhelming...

I avoid using thumbs and do all my typing with the index finger.

Still have issues with numbers creeping into anything that uses the top line though.

I'm sorry, but you're beyond help. When palaeontologists examine the fossil record in 10,000 years they'll be able to determine from the metacarpals and phalanges whether a thumb belonged to a person born 1997 onward.

Evolution has bestowed more advanced thumbs on Gen Z millenials following the introduction of the i-Phone. Fact

Going to end up with 5 fingers instead of 4 fingers/1 thumb... (fat thumb obvs.)

(Probably 1992 though, not 1997)

Stylus.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255092072602? £3.89 for 10. I'm sure they must sell them in Aus as well.

I use a stylus on an iPad when i'm out surveying/inspecting flood defences. My hands get cold so a stylus means I can keep my glves on. End up using it on my phone as well sometimes and works well.

Gboard is available for iPhone I think - it supports swiping, voice to text and (obvs) tapping.

Great call.  I do mobile apps for inspections, etc. and a stylus is a good idea.

I'll pass that one on as my own 😉
