Wide spread protesting in Europe, very little if no coverage in the mainstream media. Some of the farming social media accounts have been slightly vocal. Will we see the farmers out protesting in the UK?

Been on the BBC TV and online news about a week ago, so Guardian behind the curve.

Why would British farmers be protesting about the EU policies? We took back control.

It was featured prominently on the BBC 6pm news yesterday or the day before.

Farmers have said they face falling sale prices, rising costs, heavy regulation, powerful and domineering retailers, debt, climate change and cheap foreign imports, all within an EU agricultural system based on the premise that “bigger is better”.

Farmers, never hear them supporting anyone else's industry, but they expect us to support them.

UK farmers will be chuffed then they voted on the whole for Brexit <satire>

Has news of this only just reached you? Wow!

Complete carnage here...the autoroute around Grenoble as well as towards Lyon has been deserted/ barricaded/ turned into a tractor parking lot etc.

Went to the local supermarket on  Monday: No fresh veg or fruit. Heard others saying the impact was worse than covid.

To be fair UK supermarkets have had multiple empty shelves in the fresh fruit and veg aisle for a few years now. Can't think why that would be.

According to French media the 2 main farming unions have called for the protests to end after getting some concessions from the Gov. Not sure the farmers are all listening tho

Is this the same one that the MSM has been reporting on for the last few weeks or a new one?

According to my in laws who are in les Arcs at the moment (first world problems) it took them 8 hours to drive from Rouen because they took the back roads to avoid the blockades. Would have taken 4 and a half normally. I did question them about edging around Paris can normally take some time too! They shrugged it off with the usual Gallic shrug.

Madame is currently on the road, heading from the med up to Normandy. The A71 between Clermont-Ferrand and Bourges is still blocked in places, so they went up the A20 via Brive and Limoges, which is totally clear now. Heading up the Rhone valley and towards the Alps is another story...

"Keep Britain Farming" or some such on a Mitsubishi 4x4 made me chuckle.

Rouen, north of Paris, to Les Arcs in The alpes? No way that ever takes 4.5 hours, unless you're in a helicopter!

It was a pain here in the south of Germany - tractors blocking arterial routes and entries/exits from the autobahns (although not on the autobahns themselves) at commuter times for 3-4 random days so far.

In hindsight compared to some of the experiences described above, it could have been worse for us ...

Generally a lack of liking and respect for the public too.

Also various groups encouraging youngsters into a "career" in what's a crap industry (agriculture and businesses serving agriculture) to be in especially if you don't have your own business or inherit land.

Last time I checked, we couldn't eat IT. Here's an idea, encourage the kids and the future into it, they'll change it and it won't be a crap industry.....or your approach seems to be getting rid of it and we all die.

I won't inherit any land, nor do I own a business, but I seem to be making a decent living from agriculture and provide a home and future for my children.

Wow, there's been some unfortunate experiences to leave people with that view of farmers and farming. They're people, most are great, a few are idiots. Like cyclists.

Farming as an industry needs to be a viable career and a sustainable industry. Or we will starve to death. It shouldn’t be hard to figure that out.

That’s some top level bollocks right there.

In hindsight let me replace generally with - more often than I'd like. We only hear the bad stories abour e.g. rights of way.

I agree agri should be better. Not suggesting we write it off, and good to hear it's working well for some. As with any industry though there are dead end jobs where cheap basic labour is wanted, no training/opportunities, limited options in rural areas. I bet most on STW would have their child or grandchild go into being a farmhand as a main job for example.

You could replace it with “I have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about.”
