if they appoint a gay bloke in a civil partnership or a woman as a replacement then it might be progress otherwise it'll just be more of the same, surely?

No need to scrap religion just get it out of our system of government. We'd need an elected head of state too rather than someone 'born to rule over us'.

+1 on it's own it seems to help a lot of people. When it's used in running a country or controlling a big group of people to further the boss's ambition/power/messed up moral code it is well ****ed up.

I've nothing against religion, but I do have a massive problem with some of the idiots who profess some sort of moral authority on the subject.

I recently saw the famous interview with Cleese, Palin and the then Bishop of Westminster filmed during the release of the Life Of Brian...made my blood boil.

He had a good beard though.

When do we find out who the new one will be? Will they go for someone a bit less outspoken? From a religious point of view, Rowan Williams is pretty middle of the road christian; I think it's his forays into church vs state politix that were controversial. I suppose in a way that's what Jesus did a bit, but without the huge foundation of the Church Of England behind him he was seen as a bit more of a maverick and not many people listened to him.

Sad news IMO

Williams is one of the few voices willing to speak out and be heard on issues of injustice and equality in this country, without being tied to a particular political party of political doctrine.

I admire and applaud that, irrespective of his religion

I'm with rkko1.
I'm no fan of the Church, but Williams always struck me as a fundamentally decent bloke. It's a shame when good people go from high profile positions.

Rowan Williams always seemed pretty decent to me. I'm even to sure if he believed in God, as it does almost seem a sort of optional add-on in the Anglican faith at some times.

I thought you meant real news :

Tendulkar scores 100th international ton

However, back to your story, good luck to him in Cambridge; sure he'll do a good job.
He opened up a few good debates, and wasn't afraid to speak his mind against those who appointed him - as has been said "the most memorable Archbishop of Canterbury" in ages.

No need to scrap religion just get it out of our system of government.
Its the other way round actually. Since the establishment of the Anglican Church (by the head of state of this country), The Archbishop of Canterbury is appointed by the British Sovereign, presently according to advice from the prime minister, and has no political power.
Government interference in religion, not religious interference in government. Its the English way.

Doesn't the archbishop of cantebury have a seat in the house of lords, so whilst not part of the government certainly part of the legislature?

This. Although he might not be liked because of the position he holds he has been one of the most sensible archbishops for quite a while. Before he became archbishop he was speaking a lot of sense on the very same issues that are such hot topics now, but the combination of trying to move the church forward while holding it together must be almost impossible.

That's a coincidence, because Hugh Laurie has finished on House. Maybe there's going to be another series of Blackadder?

Seemed a good bloke to me, will be a loose.

I dont actually remember him making any controversial statements. He'd occasionally say the world needed to be fairer but that obvious to all.

Generally he'd would/have to stick to being middle of the road in case the Anglian Church would just fall apart.

Radical secularists are just as intolerant as their religeous equivalents.
They've just turned secularism into another form of religion.
A few here might like to think on that.

I'd be interested in reading their catechism and finding out what sort of god they worshipped.

Just kidding... 🙄

I agree. I'm completely atheist, but I'd rather have a pint with Rowan Williams than Richard Dawkins.

I'd have a pint with both. However I wouldn't feel as if I would have to apologise existing to Dawkins. Both are bright men with the exception of the sky fairy thing.

Maybe not, but you would have to tell him to stop banging on about there being no God and just get the bloody round in.

No its not - its the exact opposite of religion.

I have no problem with consenting adults doing what they want in private. I have huge issues with people wanting to tell me what I can and cannot do because of some fairy tale they believe in.

Rowan always came over as an OK bloke

The CofE seems to have belief in gods as an optional extra anyway. As for the rabid atheist thing I am pretty unforgiving of religion as a whole, no matter how watered down, because I don't believe in gods and think it's pretty stupid to base your life on that sort of stuff.

He always came over as an embarrassed apologist for fairy tales, twisting and turning and virtually disappearing up his own fundament to try and justify his belief in vacuous piffle, to me.

he came over as insipid and spineless, a dreary streak of lukewarm piss - quite a suitable leader of the C of E

Just out of interest, why?

No tolerence for tambourine slappers myself, but he seemed like a relatively harmless example of the breed.

Here is my nomination for the new Archbishop of Cantebury - Adam from Rev.

Got to be John Sentemu really. And you cant knock the church for some of its work, helping to abolish slavery for one.
