I've got a problem with my CH system and have trouble shot it down to the thermostat. So I've tested each of the elements of the system and confirmed they are working and the thermostat is the last thing. It's not a fancy learning stat, but it's not a simple bi-metal strip one. It's electronic, so only is live when the system timer is on, and works electronically with no mechanical switches. The output from the thermostat is constant no matter what I do with the temp control, so that is why I suspect it's knackered. So I was going to buy a replacement and may as well go the whole hog and get a Nest/Hive or similar and get whatever supposed benefits those can provide.

I like the look of the Nest stat - just as good a thing to go off aethetics as they all claim to do the same thing - so can I just replace my current stat with the Nest one or does Nest also need any additional bits of equipment? I've had a look on their website and it seems to suggest it is compatible, but gives the usual disclaimer about some systems may not be compatible so better check with a professional.

It is a wired thermostat, not a wireless one, so all completely hard wired into the system, so in theory should be a straight swap.

Thanks.

It'll be fine. It just replaces the open/closed switch of your current stat with the base unit. This can be put near the boiler. You then can put the thermostat anywhere, even move it around. It just needs usb power. Very easy to fit. Happy with our nest. Not life changing but handy

You might want to check your boiler is compatible with Nest.  I think they have a list on their site.  There are some boilers, like the ACV one we have, where the electronic thermostat isn't an on/off but rather sends the actual room temperature back to the boiler and then the boiler does clever things like controlling the water temperature according to room temp and outside temp.   In this case you can't just replace the electronic thermostat with a Nest but rather you have to reconfigure the boiler to use and on/off type system instead.  It's doable, but not as straightforward.

I did just wat your proposing a month or so ago (replaced an old school mechanical thermostat with a nest unit)

It was pretty simple to install, it took longer for me to work out what wiring was what in the old system than to install the new parts. I even reused the old wired connection to the mechanical thermostat to send the power from the nest control box to the new thermostat.

Its really nice to be able to set a different temperature for different times of day rather than the old all or nothing approach if the old timer/thermostat pair. Also made us realise just how far off the settings in the old unit were (19 on the new unit feels like 25 on the old one).
