Thinking of having a holiday in the mountains next summer, but I'm a bit clueless on where to consider. This will not be a biking trip, but anywhere conducive to my sneaking off for the odd chairlift day would be ideal. Ideal destination would be lakeside, pretty, plenty to do (walking, swimming, watersports, etc.) and plenty of eating options. Flying from Glasgow or Edinburgh. Wife has mentioned Annecy as an option, but all suggestions welcomed.

Annecy would be good.

I always say morzine is a great family location. So much to do. Go ape, ice skating, skate park, white water rafting, via ferrata, lake not far away, swimming pool, epic walking and of course super accessible mountain biking. Lots of it is suitable for little riders. Might be tough not to sneak away too much, but it's easy to do an hour or two then ride back to town.

We did a week in Morzine this year and it would be perfect. You get the morzine pass with accommodation giving access to free pedestrian lifts and a multitude of other pursuits. We stayed in Montriond on the outskirts which has a beautiful lake.

We had a day in Annecy, which is stunning but mega touristy.

Are 2 family Alpes holidays were Chamonix and lauterbrunnen. Neither had a lake but they were both great. Interlaken I think is on a lake, down the hill from Lauterbrunnen.

The Lauterbrunnen area has an incredible integrated transport network over the mountains meaning that you can plan walks with any amount of walking. You can just walk uphill or just downhill. The mountain scenery is out of this world. A notch above Morzine for me.

You can get a train up the inside of Eiger and spend a day in the snow

Zell Am See. You can sneak up to Saalbach for a days riding. Direct flights Edinburgh/Munich. 2hrs 10min drive from Munich airport to Zell.

What age are you and the children?
We did two weeks in Morzine with our three kids, eldest 19 youngest 13. It does seem to be the de facto option for a summer alps break but there is an awful lot to do. Annecy is lovely and drive able from Morzine, lac du montriond is another good spot for swimming and SUP etc.

Very easy to sneak off for a bike ride albeit I took my youngest two out on the mountains riding. Word of advice, the family blue routes around there have 30ft table tops and steep chutes! My 13yo son hit an unexpected sender at full tilt and landed in a heap at the feet of two German tourists.

memories….😂😂😂

For a family, Lauterbrunnen would be my choice, although it is a bit more expensive than France.

A friend really enjoyed Annecy with her family.

Lakes Como and Garda have loads to do and decent mountain biking.

Briancon. Loads to do as a family and the weather is much more likely to be sunny all week than the top of the Alps. Also has decent mountain and road biking.
