looking at getting the ferry to bilbao and having between 4 -7 days either near the coast or in the spanish pyrenees before moving on to luz st saveaur for a week. Looking for suggestions of either campsites with pools and or good access to the beach if on the coast, or air bnb type accomodation. Ideally good road riding would be a bonus.

thanks

I live in the Pyrénées and the North Coast of Spain is a favourite destination. I like the Zarautz to Deba area for MTB and  sea swimming. We've stayed at Agrotourismo Agote Aundi in Askizu five times - no pool but the beaches of Getaria and Zarautz aren't far away. Further towards the French border Doug above will sort you out. Once in France I suggest the campsite in Oloron Ste Marie, the municipal pool is the other side of the rugby pitch. A host of cols are an out and back ride - the ride over the col d'Hourcère followed by the col de la Pierre St Martin and return down the Soudet is one I like.

^ chat to Doug. We were there a couple of years ago.

We found the riding up nearer him better (cleared trails, trails that had effort put into them, on maps) and loved the north coast area between Ondarroa (where we stayed) and San Sebastian to be excellent. Good walks. Ace beaches. Really nice cheesecake.
We stayed here and it was excellent for a family:

As hillwalkers too we enjoyed our second week in the Picos as well. Properly jaw dropping scenery, fabulous walks and swims (hot springs...) and just lovely to spend time in.
We were in Coolio - the house was the best AirBnB we have ever had. Just don't take a big car and be prepared to squeeze in through the village streets. Riding was sh*t. A road or gravel bike though...

Oh - and take warm jacket and binoculars for the ferry. Whale and dolphins ahoy!

And I've just re-read your post: the road riding everywhere looked the business, Picos included.... The mountain biking was more challenging...

Have done variations on this theme a few times as have friends near Luchon. Always sail to Bilbao /Santander and then to do a week with them and then a week in the Basque Country or Picos. Only had a road bike with me… nothing is flat… and that’s from someone whose local riding is Quantocks / Exmoor! Picos probably just edges the others for the beaches, the (relative) lack of people and the seafood

We are planning to go a little further - to Galicia - inspired by various Walter Presents series. Anyone who’s been there before, any suggestions or advice gratefully received !

I've walked four of the Compostelle routes through Galicia into Santiago and also walked O Camino dos Pharos. The latter with a mix of sleeping under the stars and hotels was some of the most enjoyable walking I've done anywhere:
