Down in London for a few days next week with the family. 3 boys: 11, 9 and 5.

Any recommendations for evening eating?

I thought this was going to be a thread asking what dressing and garnish you want for when eating your family! Sorry, my mistake… 💀

Haven't been for a couple of years but Mercato Mayfair would be an interesting experience, wasn't too pricey & a great selection of different food types along with being in a stunning building.

Is the market open in the evening? At that age eating out and choosing your own food would be fun.

I think we really need guidance on what your kids are happy to try. I would tend to use a trip to London to try weird and wonderful things, but that may not be appropriate with the kids in tow.

A few general ideas;

- In very general terms I'd probably say it's worth walking/bussing/tubing a short distance from Camden (eg. Primrose Hill, Islington, Tufnell Park, Hampsted etc) for better options.

- Not far from Camden you have all the development behind Kings Cross which is stuffed to the gills with restaurants (eg. Dishoom, Caravan, Hoppers etc.)

- For kids I find the new(ish) wave of pizza chains are always a dependable bet. Franco Manca, Pizza Pilgrims etc.

- There's lots of great gastropubs around. The Bull and Last, Hampstead was always my favourite. St Johns Tavern, Archway was another good one.

The food market is great. Probably a bit of a faff but some great choices and quite fun.

Jay Rayner said nice things about The Great Indian, you'll need to book because of the review. https://www.theguardian.com/food/2025/feb/09/the-great-indian-london-a-thoroughly-delightful-food-pub-restaurant-review

When in Camden, the Black heart is where it's at. Be the coolest parent ever!

Realistically though Coals drop yard is and the surrounding area might be better, the market and street food might be nicer were it not February!

We're staying on Doughty St. Don't know the area at all!

The kids aren't too picky and will try stuff but street food would be fun

Out of curiosity I looked that up where that street is - while technically in the Borough of Camden, it's not really anywhere near the area that people are generally referring to when they say "Camden". When looking for options you'll be better using Bloomsbury/Clerkenwell for any googling.

In the immediate area, Honey & Co is the first one that spring so mind.

Fork Deli for pastries and coffee in the morning, the rest of my recommendations I think are no longer, the Queen Charlotte got brewdogged, it was good before.

From Camden a short walk to Asakusa in Mornington Cresent if you want absolutely banging Japanese. Be warned it can take a while for sushi to appear though so order some hot stuff too.

Camden market street food is great, if you go late 7-8ish you can get dishes for a £1!

But you're nearer whitecross street food market, which is really good, check what times it's on, but there is too much choice there!

Clerkenwell has some nice places, some decent chain stuff up from Farringdon Station - 3 compasses there for Thai,
