Has anyone heard it yet? Last year I made it to about the 10th of December before I got a snip of it in the shopping centre one evening. Pretty good going I thought though disappointing nonetheless.
I was gritting my teeth in the shops this morning, just waiting for it to kick in...
It was on telly in the pub last night.
Heard it today on the local radio station. Apparently, they've a rule that says no Xmas tunes until December.
kormoran broadway is waiting for you I promise.
Has anyone heard it yet?
How does it go?
Touch wood, not yet.
That said, we've got some 80s station on the radio in the office and we've already had Do They Know It's Christmas so it's 'when' not 'if'...
EDIT: It's on now!
It came on shuffle play in the car a couple of days ago from a Pogues compilation album. I don't mind it at all.
I avoid any programmes about Christmas, don't really spend much time in shops and tend not to listen to the radio a great deal so I rarely feel bombarded with Christmas songs which makes hearing one occasionally alright.
Not heard it yet. I'm sick of it though... over rated and vastly over played.
You scumbag you faggot, is now singing in my head. Thanks, thanks a lot.
(logs back in again, suspect that I've been booted out of my other devices too)
Yes, I heard it earlier. It's the only song I really like to hear over the Xmas period..
Appart form this:
I don't effing believe it, I just caught the end of the Radio 4 play and it was on there! No spoiler alert, nothing. The utter ****.
I was going all out for the 10th and now this
At least it was only a few seconds of instrumental I suppose. Even so I feel my chips have been pissed on.
The ironing.
faggot - maggot, I believe
faggot - maggot, I believe
Yep.
You scumbag, You maggot, You cheap lousy faggot, Happy Christmas your arse, I pray God It's our last
[Fondly remembers Kirsty McColl slapping her arse on Top Of The Pops]
The original lyrics were 'Happy Christmas you arsehole' but they were changed because it was suggested it wouldn't get any airplay like that.Happy Christmas your arse
Shame really.
It's also a bloody brilliant rollicking novel by J.P. Donleavy. A good accompaniment to the song 🙂
Yup, in October grrr

What, so have they changed it to "You scumbag, You maggot, You cheap lousy maggot?" or am I missing something?
Everyone knows this is the best chrimble song anyway:
But Tory^
🙁
But they kept the radio friendly "You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed"
🙂
Personally I love it!
Just had my first exposure, Mrs. Jay is blasting out with the youngest in the bath, can't complain they're both singing along happy as larry.
Slade now though, less forgiveable,
I love it. Just googled the lyrics for a proper read. It really is outstanding.
For the sweet love of Jesus Why?
Best Christmas song ever. In fact, the best thing about Christmas as well.
I prefer the Ronan Keating version
Ha
Not yet. Fabulous song imo.
I've been on holiday this week so on Wednesday I went to the Christmas market in Edinburgh. The alternative would have been to go there on a weekend closer to Christmas, so it was the lesser of two evils.
While I was there I heard 3 identifiable Christmas songs over the PA - Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses, Everything's Gonna Be Cool this Christmas by Eels and Fairytale of New York. Could have been much worse.
Both heart and magic FM have had Xmas stations going on dab for quite a while now, heard all the "classics" enough times already!!
For all the shenanigans, the drinking, the teeth, Shane McGowan has written some of the best lyrics of his generation. Some of them read like poetry without the music.
From the song itself, the lines:
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you
say so much in a few words. Awesome song, even if over-played.
Wednesday night, called at the Handmade Burger Co for a snack before we went to the cinema. It was playing when we went in and was played again halfway through the meal.
Agree.
It won the annual first Christmas song to be played on CFM contest today (much to the disappointment of local 'super DJ' Robbie D...)
In fairness it has won for last umpteen years too. Great song!
There’s a sing-a-long at Newcastle tonight for it.
🙄Not heard it yet. I'm sick of it though... over rated and vastly over played.
Hardly overrated when it’s one of the best Christmas songs ever written.
Unless, of course you prefer Wham, East 17, Bros and the like.
I also like Greg Lake’s I Believe in Father Christmas, The Waitresses Christmas Wrapping and a few other less obvious Xmas songs.
As I've got older, I've learned to appreciate Christmas songs, and this is one of my favourites. I like Christmas Wrapping too just for the relentless upbeat plasticness. I also like:
The Phil Spector ones
12 days of Christmas- the muppets (when they were good)
Anything Christmassy that Elvis did
Likewise James Brown
Christmas at the Zoo - Flaming Lips
My son started playing it on his flute last night - shame it wasn't one of his grade 7 exam pieces on Monday!
I love Christmas songs and this is definitely one of the best. Also really like...
River - Joni Mitchell
2000 Miles - Pretenders
A Spaceman Came Travelling - CdB
Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade
I wish it could be Christmas every day - Wizzard
Little Drummer Boy - Bing & Dave
Is it time for me to post this again?
Oh good.......
See how we yawn
At your bile and your scorn
It’s a beautiful day
Peace on Earth has been played
Make a noise with your toys
And ignore the killjoys
‘Cos it’s cliched
To be cynical
At Christmas
Fairy-tale of New York is a Christmas classic.
Other half hates My First Christmas as a Woman by the Vandals but she can't help singing along. Her enthusiasm is a little disturbing now I think about it
Chop if off! Chop if off! Chop if off!
My penis, chop it off
It's no use to me.
Cut it off!
Chop it off! Chop it off!
My penis, cut it off so I can finally be
A Woman...
Awesome. The Christmas Song of Christmas Songs
Yes and that hmhb one, because, it is.
Which is odd as they are so cynical about everything else
I think that's what makes it so brilliant.
🙂
Even got a mention on Radio 5 last week.
Fairytale of New York is a stone cold classic though and DD is spot on about Shane McGowan - boy's a genius.
"When you pissed yourself in Frankfurt and got syph down in Cologne
And you heard the rattling death trains as you lay there all alone
Frank Ryan bought you whiskey in a brothel in Madrid
And you decked some ****ing blackshirt who was cursing all the Yids
At the sick bed of Cuchulainn we'll kneel and say a prayer
And the ghosts are rattling at the door and the devil's in the chair...."
Arsehole doesnt rhyme with "last" so that's a lie.
CZ done a rolly eye. Ha, someone's wrong 😆
Building a christmas list in Spotify, any more suggestions? 🙂
CZ done a rolly eye. Ha, someone's wrong
Bloody right! 😆
Fairytale... is just a brilliant song, it’s got Kirsty M on it, which was never intended, hers was just a guide vocal, but she did such a good job her vocal was left on, and while it has real cynicism it’s got hope and optimism as well.
Stars do a pretty good version as well:
any more suggestions?
My Beerdrunk Soul is Sadder Than A Hundred Dead Christmas Trees by the Joy Formidable
Oh You (Christmas Blues) by LCD Soundsystem
Christmas Song by Mogwai
A Christmas ****ing Miracle by Run the Jewels
Christmas Time Will Soon Be Over by the White Stripes

A Christmas **** Miracle by Run the Jewels
Christmas Time Will Soon Be Over by the White Stripes
Great stuff, added. 🙂
Should I have listened to them first...?
Christmas Day by Jim White was voted the second saddest alternative country music song of all time, apparently.
, any more suggestions?
So much wine, The Handsome Family, for some Crimbo cheer

Heard it (Fairytale) yesterday in a cafe in Settle for the first time this season. Much prefer it to the schmaltz stuff like Last Christmas by Wham.
+1 to Gregg Lake as well. There's a nice dark undertone to that one.
Kirsty M, god rest her soul. Died far too young and a incredible talent.
I haven't even heard Slade yet.
Off overlooked and a bit cheesy but I think this is a bit of a modern Christmas classic
i went shopping yesterday
chris rea has already started driving home for christmas.
it was on repeat i must have heard it 30 times.
I'm in Luanda Angola !
Slade are one of the best rock and roll bands - fact!
Love Greg Lake song and Pogues with Kirsty. One of my favourite Christmas traditions in our family is a Nat King Cole Christmas album we have - just perfect.
In fact the whole of Thea's Strange Communion album is an excellent alternative Christmas album.
Really worth a listen.
At work we've been enjoying the darkness's Xmas offerings
got me today at a charity run for mental health
Check out Get Festive by The Duallers.
Si Cranstoun is the best vocalist in the UK.
Great tune, but everyone should just grow a pair and admit that Mariah nailed the greatest Christmas song of all time. 😀
This is the best christmas song but is hardly ever played
A mate's daughter recently filmed this..
I'm blessed ..I haven't heard a single Christmas song yet !
I don't listen to the radio though and I'm shielded from the commercialism as I work from home ..maybe I have just been lucky or it didn't register as I did go shopping with the missus to the Metrocentre last week .
Greg Lake's Christmas song has always been one of my favourites and will be a little more poignant as he is no longer alive.
Emerson Lake & Palmer were my schoolboy heroes and the first major live band that I ever saw on the Tarkus tour at the Odeon,Newcastle in November 1972 (age 15.)
The passing of both Greg & Keith Emerson were moments where I questioned my own mortality.
Merry Christmas !
Another favourite - Stop the Cavalry - great to wash yourself in the shower to!
The only Christmas song I’ve heard so far this year is Mariah Carey caterwauling All I Want for Christmas is You from a building site.
Should I have listened to them first...?
Depends what you like! Some of them may not be traditional style Christmas songs 😉
One of my favourite Christmas traditions in our family is a Nat King Cole Christmas album we have - just perfect.
I absolutely love my Nat King. Can't get enough of it.
Mostly a Christmas treat though ( and birthdays too)
I absolutely love my Nat King. Can't get enough of it.
He's wonderful. And Gregory Porter is a ****.
Well it finally happened...
Fairytale Of New York on local radio at work!
That gives me permission to be more grumpy than normal during shifts, becoming a postie is the worst thing you can do if you previously liked Xmas even vaguely. Parcel quantities at least treble from around Black Friday and in the final couple of weeks, the number of cards per house goes positively mental... And yet the rounds are designed to be achievable within contract hours based on typical workloads around August!
Baa humbug. 👿
Another alternative Christmas song ..and in there hey day this group used to sell out The City Hall, Newcastle for a solid week at a time with their Christmas shows ..
Alan Hull the lead singer was a lyrical genius ..five months after this show and that genius was gone forever ..and the group never really hit the heights again ..

In fact the whole of Thea's Strange Communion album is an excellent alternative Christmas album.Really worth a listen.
All of Thea’s back catalogue is worth a listen!
